Earthhome - The Shouse

The 'Shouse' is a rustic but modern earth and strawbale building in a secluded valley of protected bushland. The earthhome has become popular as a meditation and yoga retreat, for board games and conversation by the fire. It is also an excellent base for bush walking.

Overlooking a pristine bushland valley, it is a passive solar, rustic straw bale and mud structure. Cool in summer and cosy in winter (with the help of a wood-combustion fire). It is high- tech and entirely off-the-grid.

Additional Information

EARTHHOME DETAILS
The Earthhome is a clean but rustic alternative home. Meaning you need to be prepared for the shock of it not having a hair dryer or microwave. If you cant live without these you will need to bring one yourself. It does however have an essential good coffee machine.

It has one large living room with an earth floor and a king size bed enclave, kitchen facilities, shower and toilet. It also has a beautiful, airy and light upstairs loft with 4 more beds - accessed by steep ladder stairs. Being both high and steep the loft area is not suitable for small children, sleepwalkers or the infirm.

While central for Blue Mountains bush walking, the property itself also has its own creek and waterfall as well as other interesting natural features including a hanging swamp. We have a chicken yard, honey hives (and two free ranging guinea pigs too, now carried away by wedge tailed eagles). Alternative & organic but pragmatic too.

Named 'The Shouse' because it was originally intended as a studio, but over the course of the building process, developed into a very comfortable 'house' which our family lived in for 2 years.

GUEST ACCESS
Guests have all the advantages of a self-contained kitchen. It has a bathroom, a wood heater for winter, a writers desk overlooking the valley. Instead of a tv you will find a growing library of books, board games and an imperfectly tuned piano . Bush walking and transport information. If you need access to the internet you will need to bring your own dongle (the reception is fine) or log in at one of the local cafes.

We can also put you in contact with an astunga yoga session guide or masseuse.

PLEASE NOTE
The ladder stairs to the loft makes that sleeping area less suitable for elderly or disabled guests and unsuitable for young children and/or unsupervised older children.

No dogs or cats allowed - as we have chickens, lots of wild birds and wallabies.

INTERACTION WITH GUESTS
Our family home (another strawbale building) is 50 metres down the hill so your privacy is as assured as you wish it to be. Steve or S'haila are usually onsite if you have questions or need directions/advice either in person or call.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE
This accommodation will be suited to people interested in peace and quiet, away from tv and the internet too (unless you want to bring your own dongle - reception here is reasonable). People interested in bushwalking, alternative building, living and architecture too.

DIRECTIONS
Drive down Terrace Falls Road till it becomes a gravel road. Then after 300metres of gravel you will see our open gates on your right. Number is 129 on the letterbox.

Our drive is very steep so please park in the large space just inside the farm gates (and walk down) if you are not a confident driver.

Your accommodation 'The Shouse', is the first of the two buildings you will see as you come down the driveway. It has the solar panels on the roof.

If you are comfortable driving down the driveway, you can park at the side of the shouse.

Key will be in the entrance door near the table tennis table. Ring me (Steve) on 0414 368 458 if you have any queries on arrival. I will probably be at the main house or in the garden.

Remember we are completely off the grid so we ask that you conserve water by limiting your showers to 3 minutes. Also we ask that you dont allow any chemical products to go into our shower or toilet (eg hair dye). We supply shampoo and soap which are fine. The hot water system is water pressure ignited so turn the hot tap on first and wait till it is hot before adding the cold water as required.

Split wood for the fireplace is supplied and left next to the table tennis table. THIS SPLIT WOOD IS ONLY FOR THE INSIDE WOOD HEATER.

Be aware the house is a shoes-off house as it is a mud floor and cant withstand heavy wear.

Check in time is 2pm and check out is 10am.

The Shouse is not ideal for young children as the loft stairs are so steep which is why we decided to restrict visitors age to over 12 years.
