Breathtaking Bringalbit
Adventure in Kyneton, Macedon Ranges, VIC, AU
We were excited to head toward the Macedon Ranges after hearing endless comments about how beautiful the area was. The Woolshed Hill House is just over an hour from Melbourne's CBD and we were eager to make the quick drive on Friday afternoon for our two-night stay.
We arrived at Bringalbit Country Retreat – the homestead and historic garden where the house is located – on a rainy evening after dark. Susan, the owner of Bringalbit, was kind enough to invite us into the homestead, next to a warm fire, to tell us everything that we needed to know about the property. It's surrounded by gardens, which were planted in the 19th century and are open to the public on the weekends. We felt like we had hit the jackpot, staying right in the gardens with so much history and life around us.
Entering Woolshed Hill House, we saw that there was everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The Woolshed Hill House has a lot of rustic charm but contains everything you need for a relaxing trip with three bedrooms, three bathrooms, heaters (which we used quite a bit), and a full kitchen perfect for making our fresh farm eggs in the morning.
On our second day, we took up Susan's offer for a tour around the gardens and d we're glad we did! We could have spent the whole day exploring the area. There's so much to do in the gardens – a picnic by the lake, a hike to a local creek, a walk through the historic homestead house and an opportunity to feed the many animals on the property, including the highland cows, peacock, chickens, and even possums. After our time in the garden, we spent the afternoon visiting a couple of nearby wineries in the Macedon Ranges.
The following day, feeling well rested from the peaceful night's sleep, we spent our final morning exploring the private olive garden in our backyard before packing up and heading back to Melbourne. Being so close to Melbourne, we stopped for a quick morning hike at Camels Hump and some coffee in the local town of Woodend, before ending our adventure in Kyneton....

Macedon Ranges is known for its wine and Mount Towrong Vineyard was one of our favourite winery stops. We enjoyed a wine tasting and learned about the architectural history from the owner himself, before sitting for some nibbles and a glass of the Lagrein 2019 while admiring the views. Helpful tip: Come hungry – the food looked absolutely delicious here....
