Hills of Gold

High in the hills of East Gippsland you’ll find the sleepy old mining town of Walhalla. Steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty, this hidden gem is a great place to escape, especially since there’s no phone reception and wifi is frowned upon in town. With the beautiful Thomson River nearby, as well as countless beautiful bushland walks, Walhalla is a rejuvenating retreat from the modern world.

This charming black cabin immediately catches your eye as you drive into the township of Walhalla, as it sits in its nook amongst the trees overlooking the historic railway station. The cottage is beautifully rustic, with no more than you need and a cozy fireplace to curl up in front of. The pub is within easy walking distance for a meal or a drink and the rest of the town is not much further to explore the history of the area and to get out into nature.

Kayaking Thompson River
Putting in at the Walhalla Road Bridge, we kayaked up the serene, fern-lined Thomson River. The water is crystal clear and the river is a tranquil setting for a sunset paddle....
The Wally Pub
Only a short stroll from the cottage is the Wally Pub where you can grab a drink or something to eat and chat with the locals. We recommend the wedges, steak and lamb!...
Historical Township
Walhalla was once a booming mining town, with over 4,000 residents at its peak. Now with only 20 full-time residents it’s full of history, beautiful cabins and a ghost or two. Find out more at the local museum (situated at the local Post Office), who run ghost tours and have all the information you need for a visit...
Walhalla Goldfields Railway
Situated just below the cottage is the historic Walhalla Goldfields Railway, which leads you on a short 20 minute ride through the pristine Stringer’s Gorge. The gorge is filled with small canyons, clear streams that you can spot fish in from the train and beautiful trees and ferns....
