Take the Road Less Travelled

Sometimes you forget the importance and fulfillment you get from gathering a few friends, throwing your stuff in the back of the car and leaving the city behind you. Once we arrived at Mt Sturgeon Cottages we knew exactly why we need to do this more. We arrived at Mt Sturgeon Cottage late in the afternoon with kangaroos surrounding the property catching the last bit of sunshine. The cottage sits at the foot of the ever impressive Mt Sturgeon near the town of Dunkeld, the southern gateway to the Grampians We spent the next few days taking the roads less travelled in the Southern Grampians and checking out what this area could offer us and we were not disappointed. If you're looking for a place where you have nature on your doorstep, ever-changing landscapes and want to unwind this is the place for you....

Things We Did

  • Hike
  • Food & Drink
Mt Sturgeon Hike
A 7km round trip to the top and back, this hike will get your heart pumping both due to gradient and the views from the top. It may take you longer than you think as like us we had to keep stopping to appreciate the views and capture some photos. We would allow 2.5-3 hours to do the round trip. Make sure you stop by the General Store beforehand and pick up some food for a picnic at the top. Other hikes we also did were Mt Abrupt and the Pinnacles....
Royal Mail Kitchen Garden
If you love food like us you can’t miss out on visiting the Royal Mail Hotel’s kitchen garden. This is Australia’s largest working restaurant kitchen garden where all the products for the hotel restaurant are grown onsite and harvested daily by the chefs. We were lucky enough to be taken around the garden by one of the chefs who showcased everything in the beautiful space. It was incredible to hear from the chef about the challenges and way that they use the products in a commercial kitchen. It’s safe to say that we had a further appreciation for the food the chef put on our plate later that evening....
Pinnacles Hike
We hiked from the base to the top starting out at Halls Gap Caravan Park. The Pinnacles Hike was the most challenging hike we did over the weekend and it's not for the faint-hearted. With 9.6 km of undulating terrain, we did the return in just over 5 hours and we can safely say it was worth every minute with the incredible views along the way and getting a well-earned rest at the top looking over the Grampians. If a 5 hour hike isn't your thing you can drive to the Sundial Car Park and walk 2.1 km to the Pinnacles which is just 1 hour 30 return....
Wine Trails
We did a little bit of research on some of the local vineyards and made our way around 5 or 6 over the weekend. There are plenty to choose from and our favourites were Pierrepoint Vineyard and Fallen Giants in the Northern Grampians. Make sure you leave room for all the tasty platters....
The Dunkeld Old Bakery
If you're like us and need a coffee fix before your day really starts head to the Dunkeld Old Bakery. These guys started baking back in 1887 and you can see why they are still here as all their food is delicious. They even still use the same bread oven from back then. Be sure to try their sausage rolls and pick up some fruit from the community sharing cart....
