High Above Halls Gap

The onset of winter called for a crisp-aired getaway, so we threw the Stingray Tree Tent into the car and headed west. We steered our way to the Halls Gap Visitor Information Centre for some friendly advice on wild bush-camping within the Grampians National Park. Poring over our new map with coffees in hand at local café Harvest, we made our decision.

We drove into the hills and found our perfect site nestled among the trees on the cliff edge, where we were treated to an incredible sunset across the expansive valley floor and distant mountain ranges. A hearty dinner had us drifting off to sleep; only briefly disturbed by the nocturnal shufflings of inquisitive marsupials below our lofty perch.

An early awakening to catch the sunrise from The Balconies was thwarted by the thick cloud blanketing the mountains, so we weaved our way down to the awesome MacKenzie falls. A quick lunch, sheltering from the rain at Paper Scissors Rock Brew Co before driving north to see the dramatic silo art at Rupanyup. Turning for home we had barely scratched the surface of everything the Grampians has to offer – we will definitely be back again soon!
