Island Charm

A +3 hour drive from Sydney and a pleasant boat ride across the river transported us to the only house on Gareeba Island, a secluded and charming family home named “The Island”.

After settling in by the fireplace, we awoke to a day with plans to take in the history and richness of the island. Their collection of vintage records set the tone for a slow morning of yoga, reading, and breakfast on the sun-drenched deck. With the weather warming up we went for a paddle around the glassy waters of the Wallamba River, exploring its little inlets and mangroves until sunset approached. We paddled back to the jetty to prepare dinner for a night of stargazing by the firepit. Gorgeous.

Another slow morning had us becoming more curious to the quirks of the house; family photos, vintage clothes, toys, and furniture, and artworks formed a story and presence to the house’s unique character. You could feel the history of the place - but alas, it was time to leave.

A quick boat ride across brought us back to our cars and in 20 minutes, we step foot on Black Head beach to explore sea caves, swim in rock pools, and peer into the sea life in the tide pools. This gem of a beach was the cherry on top of an already fantastic weekend.
