Eco-Friendly Retreat in Bellbrae

On the first day of Summer (a balmy 10-degree day) we set off on our coastal escape to Bellbrae, a rural town tucked away near the Great Ocean Road. After driving through the rolling hills and bushland, we pulled up to a driveway where a Kelpie-cross, Eddie, met us for a friendly welcome and to round up the vehicle. From the guest carpark, we found our private and eco-friendly shipping container retreat, nestled in a beautiful plantation.

The original owner of the property was an environmental scientist, and his foresight revegetated the land with 25 native and indigenous trees. Conscious about living sustainably, the current owners, Renee and Jason, have since planted over 200 trees and plants to restore the vegetation further, protect wildlife and minimise soil erosion. They also run the property on rainwater and solar power, recycle waste with worm farms and chemical-free practises, and heat the rooms with their home-grown firewood.

Between the warmth of our hosts, the privacy of the accommodation and the weak phone signal, we were completely immersed in the atmosphere of the land. We spent our time soaking up the rustling sounds of the trees when floating on the hammock and stayed dry by the fire as we watched the rain fall slowly. Eventually, we braced the cold to see what the incredible coast has to offer and numbed the chill with a few tasty local wines at the Bellbrae Winery. At night we enjoyed the charismatic barn included on the property, rummaging through Jason’s incredible vinyl collection, dancing and sampling more local wine.

  • Wildlife
Bells Beach
One of Australia’s most famous surf beaches, the coastline is exposed to intense surf from the Southern Ocean, shaping this rugged coastline. If you're a sightseer like ourselves, Bells Beach is a popular spot with high vantage points along the cliff. Try not to get blown away in the process....
Point Addis Marine National Park
A short and cruisy 6-minute drive along back roads and through the bush, this marine park features spectacular scenery with wide sandy beaches, crumbling limestone and sandstone cliffs and extensive small, rocky reefs. While also an excellent beach for surfing, us amateurs only braved the cold for a quick dip....
Bellbrae Estate Winery
This region has so many incredible wineries to offer! Visit Bellbrae Estate on a Sunday for live blues music and start with a generous wine tasting. We opted for the Rosé....
Bush Walks
This 10-acre property is surrounded by natural bush, indigenous trees and plants including manna gums, blue gums, swamp gums, black wattle and black wood. Spring Creek runs through the northern-eastern border, and a shallow billabong runs along the southern boundary. If you’re lucky enough, you might even spot the friendly wallaby that lives on the property....
