Bountiful Berries

Having spent a few days camping at Seal Rocks, we carried on Northbound this time taking a break from the coast to spend time inland in the Bellingen area. West from Bellingen town, the drive spirals upwards to the rich red soil of Dorrigo plateau through the towering rainforest, past gushing waterfalls and the Bellinger River. After 30 minutes and at 1000 metres above sea level where the air is decidedly cooler, we reach David’s vast property, Boss Berries. We are greeted by him and taken on a tour around his impressive blueberry farm stopping at the dam, the vegetable garden, the chicken coop and the field to meet Fergie, the friendly pet cow.

Surrounded by ancient rainforest, dramatic waterfalls and beautiful heritage, the land is so abundantly verdant and fruitful. On warm days it’s not uncommon to seek relief from the heat by taking a dip in the Never Never River, where its crystal clear waters cascade hundreds of meters down the escarpment. We took a book and some fruit and spent hours lazing on the sunny rocks finding a form of tranquillity in the sunshine and the sound of light rapids washing past. Be sure to stop past Bellingen Gelato on your return route home - it’s the best gelato in NSW I’ve ever come across and they use tons of locally grown and native Australian ingredients (some quite boozy too).

The night is balmy and we head into Bellingen for dinner to absorb a little of the town’s buzz - there’s an impressive modern Japanese restaurant hidden in an old wooden building backing onto a field, serving up some of the region’s finest Japanese cuisine. Lucky for us it’s not a long drive back, nor a boring one!

The cottage feels a world away, yet it’s within reach of all the attractions of the area. It sure exceeded our expectations, so much so that we booked in a few extra nights - handy having loose plans for opportunities like this!

Sadly, we leave Dorrigo, our car filled with the smell of freshly baked goods from Components Cafe as snacks for the road as we continue north.
