Quiet Country Escape

Malmsbury, Victoria
Hitting the road on a Friday night after a hectic week always seems like a mission, but then the country starts to roll by and with Malmsbury only an hour from Melbourne it felt like we were pulling up to the Barn Owl in no time at all. The barn is located on the edge of Malmsbury and surrounded by quiet country town streets, paddocks and the constant sound of birds - The Barn Owl for the weekend instantly felt like a unique city escape.

Arriving right at sunset we were warmly greeted by Thomas and his two adorable dogs George and Bruce and fast friends were made. Keen to stretch the legs we headed out to the back paddocks next to the property and enjoyed the last light and then warmed the hands up next to the outdoor fire.  The Barn Owl was perfect for the four of us.

Thomas and Mark had generously provided some fresh eggs from their chooks and local produce for our first breakfast. This worked out great as we were yet to head to the Kyneton to do our grocery shopping for the weekend and the kitchen was perfectly equipped for all the great food we cooked up over the weekend.

The fireplace was the centre of attention and we set up camp with cheese boards and wine and spent hours playing cards and catching up. Really great relaxed weekend and lots of laughs shared as we explored the area.

Accommodation

The Barn Owl

With a loft upstairs, another bedroom downstairs, lots of natural light, fireplace and the rustic comfortable set up - we immediately felt at home.  We left the blinds open and enjoyed the sunrise and the fog-filled mornings in the surrounding paddocks....

Things We Did

  • Bike
  • Walk
  • Food & Drink
Country bike ride
We had planned to go on a big ride but when we set off in the morning towards the path, we found ourselves enjoying our slow bike ride through the local streets, past the bluestone houses and country surroundings....
Botanical Gardens & Viaduct walk
Great local spot to wander around the duck-filled pond and river. The Viaduct is an impressive structure and if you time it right, you might catch a train or two passing through town....
Small Holdings Restaurant
We had heard great things about Small Holdings. Once a Presbyterian Church but now a quaint restaurant with an open kitchen, warm service, country homestead decor, and a cozy 'you're now part of the family' vibe. It was only a 10-minute stroll into the center of Malmsbury and we spent our evening enjoying the beautiful food and company by the fire of this great local and unique spot....
Moto Bean Coffee Roasters
Best coffee in town was definitely Moto Bean Coffee Roasters. Uniquely decorated with motorbikes and filled with locals catching up and talking about footy, it was a great place to start the day....
