Additional Information

TIN CHALET DETAILS
- Fully self-contained
- Compact and comfy
- Solar hot water and power
- Wifi - via satellite (limited speed and download).

In winter the Tin Chalet is warm, having double glazed windows and being well insulated all round.
The wood stove cooks meals and keeps the place cosy.

The upstairs bedroom has a double bed, and there is an optional pull-out single sofa bed downstairs.

Not suitable for toddlers to 8 yo's.

Bathroom, laundry and loo are off the verandah. The old fashioned composting toilet needs old fashioned considerations (it doesn't flush).

The kitchen has a wood stove plus a double burner gas stove for cooking, a small 40 litre fridge and a pantry. There is a small study nook as well as a 2 seater lounge to flop on.

THE AREA
Goongerah is a small isolated valley, 70km north of Orbost and the one road through the settlement heads into NSW, Canberra or the snow fields. It is surrounded by forests and wildlife.

The community of about 30 people, has a phone box, a CFA shed and a hall. Most people are interested in growing their own food, using renewable energy and have a fairly progressive and environmental outlook.

The nearest shops are a long drive so please come with all your needs, and even a spare jerry of fuel if you intend to visit the parks.

PLEASE NOTE
Many areas have been badly burnt in the Black Summer fires (2019-20). The Errinudra National Park to the east managed to avoid the worst of it. It has several walks through 'dinosaur land' cool temperate rainforests and old growth forests with 600 year old giants - small areas that resisted the fire.
There is Mt Morris/Woolly Butt Hill which overlooks the Brodribb Wilderness, Mt Koskiusko, the Cobberas and the Gelantipy Plateau.
The other high spot is Mt Ellery (burnt); a challenging 1km climb takes you up through the giant granite boulders strewn throughout the tall Mountain Ash forests at the summit.
To the west of Goongerah is the Snowy River National Park with its dry rainshadow woodlands, ancient calytris pines, the famous Snowy River (warmest river in the state despite its name), and the nearby Little River Gorge - truly breath-takingly steep and deep.

    The Winding Road To Goongerah

The 90-minute drive from Orbost to Goongerah winds between lush ferns and tall Manna gums. It also depicts just how easily a bushfire can ravage a region. This forest is still regenerating – you can see blackened trunks starting to sprout new green life – and it's both alien and magical all at once....

Let’s get one thing straight – Goongerah is a tiny town. Like, sixty locals and counting kind of tiny. It doesn’t have a cafe and you won’t find a supermarket; in fact, you’ll be hard pressed to get any phone reception. But getti...
