Refreshing Stay on the Rangitikei

Nestled away on the banks of the Rangitikei River is River Valley Lodge's Treetop Deluxe Room. The rustic accommodation was ideal as a romantic getaway for two adventurers. As we drove on the windy gravel road to the lodge, we were initially struck by the natural teal river running parallel to our stay. Soon, we noticed an idyllic waterfall cascading down the side of the mountain, eventually becoming part of the river.

The massive dining hall inside was warmed by a central fire and country music filled the airwaves. The room itself was rustic with all the basic amenities any traveller would need; a hot shower, a comfortable queen bed, views of the gorge, complimentary teas and coffees, and a heater in case it got chilly. WiFi only works in the dining hall and reception areas, making the Treetop Deluxe Room the perfect opportunity to unplug and unwind.

We spent our mornings drinking tea on the deck, taking in the views around us. Eventually, we scuttled over to the dining hall for a beautiful farm-to-table breakfast. My "vegetarian super bowl" filled my belly for a day of adventuring. One afternoon, we explored the White Cliffs Boulders, trekking for 20 minutes through farmland sprinkled with sheep to get to the forest. We had the place entirely to ourselves! On another, we hiked up to Mount Stewart Reserve's scenic lookout behind the famous Taihape Gumboot. The lush mountain views around us were stunning. In the evenings, we soaked in the on-site hot tub, refreshing our legs from the day's walking. The hot tub views of the waterfall and river make it a truly serene experience.

Whitewater rafting and kayaking experiences can be booked through the lodge, and they are certainly on my list of things to do next time - and there most definitely will be a next time! It was truly an escape to remember, an unplugged weekend I look back at with fondness.

Hike to the nearby White Cliffs Boulders! The walk takes about 40 minutes roundtrip with river views along the way. Once you make it to a twisty forest landscape, you'll be greeted by giant, moss-covered boulders. Park at the free car park that's well-posted and follow the orange triangles through farmland filled with sheep and cows!

A quick 15-minute walk starting at the trailhead behind the famous Taihape Gumboot will get you to a scenic lookout with a wooden viewing tower. Native trees are marked along the path so that you can learn about your surroundings while you walk.
