Kidding Around June Cottage

In the winter time the weather gods bless the rich Peninsula soil with plenty of rain, yet rarely in such abundance as our weekend at The June. Despite torrential downpours and extreme hail, nothing could dampen the cosiness and warmth we encountered once inside.

Nestled amidst stunning green pastures in the Dromana and Red Hill hinterland, the cottage had everything we could possibly need for a relaxing getaway, and it wasn't long before we opened a local pinot and got the wood fire roaring for a cosy night in. Having collected fresh local produce along the way we cooked up a storm together over wine and laughter: reminiscent of a family holiday, only this time between friends.

We were lucky enough to find breaks in the rain where we could tour the country laneways, learning of the farm's native trees, bee-keeping ventures and a thing or two about raising kids! Our time with the goats was definitely a highlight, with the bottle-fed kids snuggling into our necks like warm puppies and the older doe showing their personalities as we fed them.

Set on 48 beautiful acres and home to 60 of these adorable creatures, June Cottage made for a delightful farm stay. The property was the perfect base for us to explore the area, a land so rich in good food, wine and breathtaking views. And don't let me forget that outdoor bath! What a way to end a day of adventures by sinking back into hot-tub bliss, overlooking undisturbed countryside lit up by the moon...

It's goat kidding season in September; it's safe to say we'll definitely be back!

We took a drive around the Peninsula's rugged side where rolling hills meet the wild ocean and Antarctic winds blow the world's cleanest air across the land. Braving the weather we watched the storms roll in towards the Cape Schanck lighthouse and stopped roadside regularly to say hi to grazing locals or take in the endless photo opps along the coast....

Wintry weekends call for comfort food and great wine, and we certainly found it here. We loved being able to tuck into a delicious meal overlooking the vineyards yet still be toasty and warm inside their heated terrace. Afterwards you can indulge yourself in a tasting or laze the day away on their adult sized timber tree swing....

Meeting the farm's herd of gorgeous Boer goats was indeed a real highlight of our stay. The Host showed us around the property and allowed us to feed these gentle creatures and meet the cheeky alpacas that watch over the herd. We can't wait to return to the property during kidding season when the babies arrive....

Southern style slow cooking meets former mechanics workshop come Aussie beer hall... And it's a hit! There is something really cool about the atmosphere of Redgum BBQ, with long picnic-style tables that bring both strangers and friends together and an aroma that gets the tastebuds going from the moment you walk through the door.....

There's something beautiful about beach walks on wild days with the wind in your hair and your winter woollies shielding you from the cold. We walked along this classic old pier, jutting out towards Bass Strait where you can see rugged cliffs down the coast and views of Phillip Island in the distance....

By far the most adorable grocery store we've experienced in our lives. Set amidst the farm's lush green acres, an old timber barn houses the day's fresh produce foraged from the land itself. Fairy lights throw just enough light for you to wander mindfully, collecting your greens in wicker baskers or enjoy a hearty bowl of soup cooked on the fire....
