Yellow Mellow Seaside Getaway
Adventure in Lake Tyers Beach, Gippsland, VIC, AU
We were stoked to escape the Melbourne heat for a few days for a much needed seaside getaway. We packed the car and headed down the highway to Lake Tyers. We were thrilled to pull up to the beautiful sun-filled yellow beach shack that is Yellow Mellow, just in time to wander down to the pub to watch the sun set over the lake.
The next morning, we drove down to Paynesville, about fifty minutes away, to catch the ferry over to Raymond Island where you can explore the island in search of koalas - and you’ll very likely see many! We ate a picnic lunch and then began our journey back to Lake Tyers, stopping into Metung on the way for afternoon tea at the local cafe. We had scones, jam and cream - a roadtrip classic.
In the evening, we cooked a barbecue dinner in the backyard and watched the sun set from the deck. On Saturday, we headed north to Marlo and Cape Conran Coastal Park; a beautiful spot for long walks and empty beaches. We walked the French Narrows Coastal Walk in the morning and were lucky enough to witness the lakes turn pink. We beach-hopped from Sailors Grave to Salmon Rocks, where we ate a picnic lunch and explored the rock pools. On the way home, we stopped in for pizza and locally-brewed beers at Red Bluff brewery.
When we got home, we rinsed off the saltwater in the warm outdoor shower before spending the afternoon reading books and relaxing at the beach shack. We sat in the backyard by the campfire as the sun went down, and after dark we walked down to the beach to watch the bioluminescent algae in the ocean which made the water glow blue - a magical experience!
Our last morning we spent at the beach. There’s a sandbank that divides the lake and the ocean which is the perfect place to read a book and go for a swim - we watched dolphins surfing the waves! We had the best time at Yellow Mellow Beach Shack exploring beautiful Lake Tyers, and we hope to return again soon!

Things We Did
- Pub
- Walk
- Beach
- Brewery
- Sunset
We walked down to Lake Tyers Beach Tavern for dinner. The tavern has beautiful views over the lake and a delicious menu - our favourite was the seafood linguine and crumbed local flathead tails!
You can catch the ferry across to Raymond Island for free from Paynesville, and once there you can explore the trails the island has to offer. The koala trail is amazing and we were lucky enough to see many koalas!
The French Narrows Coastal Walk takes you along the coastline and lakes between Marlo and Cape Conran. We were lucky enough to see the lakes turn pink while we were there!
Salmon Rocks is a beautiful and secluded beach in Cape Conran. The sea here is quite wild but there are rock pools to explore and you can climb the rocks for great views across the beach.
We stopped at Sailors Grave at East Cape Beach for a picnic and swim. The beach is quite rough but Sailors Grave has rocks that give a little more shelter from the swell. There's also lots of picnic spots with a view!
Local brewery Red Bluff Brewers is a great spot for pizza and locally brewed beer. The mango pale ale was a favourite!
We watched the sun set over Lake Tyers Beach with a picnic dinner, and once it got dark we were lucky enough to see the bioluminescent algae light up the ocean! This phenomenon is quite rare but your best chance of seeing it is later in the summer.
