A Golden Delight
Adventure in Swifts Creek, Gippsland, VIC, AU
Onto our next adventure my friend Robyn and I were ready to go! The drive along the Great Alpine Rd was a delightful introduction into what was ahead of us at Blake’s Hut.
Driving through Swift’s Creek, we stopped for a homemade pie from the local bakery. A little birdy told us it was ‘award winning’ in their eyes, and we must stop! And by golly they weren’t wrong!! $6 pie with a side of salad went down a treat! Straight into our pie holes with no time to talk!
We opened two gates leading to the hut on the hill and were welcomed with some moos from the locals. The exterior of the hut was incredible. Beautiful timber posts holding up the verandah with what looked like a hand made timer fence that wrapped around the entire hut with some giant gum trees near by.
A beautiful red gum bench top in the kitchen and what looked like the original stove which shared a large space with the lounge room. The sun began to set down, and Robyn set out of cut some fire wood so we could settle in for the night. Red wine, warm fire, tacos and the amber tones throughout the hut really set the mood for an early night - and that is what we did.
Rising with the sun, we adventured out to Omeo, 20 minutes from our stay. The town wasn’t a town I would say I’ve come across before. It was like a scene in an old western book my Grandpa liked to read. High spirited locals and pots of tea done right with warm welcomes from every store we entered. We got lost in the Omeo Op shop and found time in the cuckoo clock with the owner and the localist of locals Leonie, who had all the local knowledge of who’s who and where the gold was at!
We explored the mountains, caves and rivers in search of shiny things. Robyn was so into finding gold, but for me, I had already hit the Jacpot having a friend like her. The day flew quicker than Peter Pan, and we drove back to our humble abode to watch the sunset.
We filled the iron bath to the brim just like our hearts and reminisced on the memories made that day as we laughed our faces off into the night. With a large bed each, we both slept in the next day and started our day slow with coffee and yoga on the verandah. Hand in hand we took three deep breaths, and we went our separate ways leaving Blake’s Hut, as well as each other, with pockets full of stories and a maybe a speck of gold or two!

Things We Did
- Bakery
- Lookout
- Town
Absolutely incredible! $6 pie with a side of salad! And it was soooo yum we went back the next day for another!
An easy walk through the bush to find this lookout. Keep your eye out of snakes and shiny rocks friends, aka gold! We didn't see any but the walk does have some long grass about. There's also toilets and other things to do here such as caves, creeks and several bush walks! So pack a picnic and make a day of it!
Omeo is a town quite like no other I've come across. It was like walking back in time to a Western story. We had an awesome time exploring the town and make sure you make your way to the cuckoo clock shop and talk to the owner Leonie! She's a real treat!
