Kaitake Coastal Oasis
Adventure in Kaitake, Taranaki, NZ
Hidden in the wild foothills of the Kaitake Ranges, Kaitake Kabana is the kind of place you stumble upon and immediately feel like you’ve entered another world. The moment you arrive, the air changes, crisp, still, filled with the earthy scent of native bush and the swoop of kererū drifting through the trees. Off-grid and solar powered, this studio retreat dares you to disconnect. No WiFi. Barely any reception. Just you, the forest, and the rhythm of nature.
Inside, the space is warm and intimate, perfect for two, yet welcoming enough for extra adventurers. Step outside and the real magic happens. A sprawling deck opens to the bush line, complete with a BBQ and a fire pit that crackles into the night, ideal for toasting marshmallows as the stars ignite overhead. And then there’s the outdoor bath, tucked in the trees like a secret treasure. Sink into the warm water and watch as twilight settles over the ranges.
With the beach just a few minutes away and world-class surf, epic tracks, and laidback cafés close by, Kaitake Kabana is a pulse of excitement wrapped in total serenity. It’s where romance meets adventure, and the wild meets absolute comfort.

Birdwatching under the Kaitake Ranges at the Kaitake Kabana is a peaceful and rewarding way to connect with nature. The area is full of kererū drifting heavily through the canopy and lively tūī flashing between branches. Their rich, melodic calls echo through the bush, creating a beautiful soundtrack as you watch them feed, swoop, and interact. Surrounded by dense native forest, it’s an immersive, calming experience that showcases the vibrant birdlife thriving in this untouched corner of Taranaki
A drive down Surf Highway 45 from Ōakura to Ōpunakē is a classic Taranaki adventure, packed with surf breaks, hidden beaches, and great fishing spots. Stop at Ahu Ahu Beach and Weld road river for wide open coastline, then cruise to Stent Road, famous for its world-class right-hander. Bayly Road offers a laid back boat club vibe (open for some yum fresh fish and chips on a Friday night in the Summer) and a boat ramp for anyone heading out to fish. As you continue south, the scenery shifts from rugged reefs to golden sand, ending at beautiful Ōpunakē Beach is perfect for swimming, picnics, or watching the surf roll in. It’s a journey filled with endless coastal gems
Black Sands in Ōakura is the kind of restaurant you visit once and immediately want to return to. Famous for its amazing pizzas, it’s tempting to stick with the favourites, but the real magic is in the gourmet menu, where fresh local seasonal ingredients and creative flavours shine. Add in the stunning beach views, cocktails with sunsets that make every meal feel special, and it’s easy to see why locals love it. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, perfect after a day on the sand or for a cosy night out. Go for the pizza, leave with a pizza or stay for the views and everything else.
A short adventure up to Wilkies Pools rewards you with a stunning series of natural lava-formed terraces filled with crystal clear water, it even has a "natural rock slide". The walk is easy, green, lush, and perfect for a quick nature escape. If you’ve got extra time, swing by Dawson Falls as well, make the most of the area and drive a powerful cascade framed by mossy forest and classic Taranaki scenery. Both spots offer memorable views with minimal effort
The Ōakura River in Taranaki is a refreshing spot to cool off on a hot day, best enjoyed at high tide when the water is deeper and clearer. It’s definitely not a place to swim after a storm, as debris and fast currents can make conditions unsafe. Always check for logs, submerged branches, and water depth before getting in. On calm days, locals love the laid-back vibe, and if you’re feeling a little daring, you can join the brave few who jump off the bridge, just make sure it’s safe first. It’s a classic summer hangout with a touch of thrill
...Soaking in the outdoor bath at the Kaitake Kabana at night is a truly tranquil bush experience. With no city lights anywhere near, the stars appear brighter and closer than ever. The warm water contrasts beautifully with the cool forest air, while the gentle sounds of native birds and rustling leaves surround you. Wrapped in nature and complete stillness, it feels like your own secluded sanctuary, peaceful, grounding, and unforgettable
