Timbarra Hideaway is a Strawbale Cottage bush retreat for people who love waking up to the sound of birds and a trickling river. Situated in the East Gippsland Mountains on the bank of the Timbarra River this comfortable, technology free, self contained house is perfect for your escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

This unique house was built by owners Jeff and Joy from scratch. Neither had built a house before and ventured into the challenge of an alternative creation using strawbales. The house features thick hand rendered walls, poles cut from the neighbouring farm, poured earth floor, recycled corrugated iron feature walls, slow combustion cooking, wood fire and modern composting toilet. It has texture, warmth and some gorgeous quirky surprises for guests to find. The water is heated by the cooking stove and the house is powered by solar power. The kitchen is fully equipped, choice of gas or wood fired BBQ with outdoor chairs and tables provided.

Only 40 metres from the river the house is surrounded by farmland with cows and sheep often wandering by. Dogs are not welcome for this reason - no matter how well behaved. Motor bikes and guns are not allowed either.

Very relaxing, off grid experience! The river is so close and great for swimming on a warm day. Loved learning to cook on the wood stove too! Watching the sweet Wrens and Willy Wagtails was fun too.

Thos was one of the most amazing locations I have been to. The flowing river on the property, trees and rolling hills. It's definitely one of a kind and completely secluded.

We would stay here again ...in a heartbeat.

The house is equipped with absolutely everything you need! It's beautiful. Truly, so much heart has gone into this property.

Highly recommended! We will be back

Joy had a career as a community health nurse and Jeff has worked in several jobs inlcluding as an electrician. Both are practical people who like to 'think outside the square' enjoying the challenge of finding a solution to problems. Both love recycling stuff. Timbarra was Joy's childhood home while Jeff was a city boy. Both love living in East Gippsland and spent many happy days camping at Timbarra before biting the bullet and building this lovely Straw Bale house. It was an adventure as they explored how to build in straw and then got busy and at times very, very dirty making their dream a reality. After camping in a shed and old caravan for several years on weekends, longer periods for Jeff, it was super exciting to finally be able to say 'We are finished"!

Adventures Nearby

Here are some details about the adventures nearby. Refer to the map for their location.

Kayaking

Kayaking is best when the river is running a little higher than the usual summer flows such is during spring when high country snow is melting. Also popular trout stream suited to bait, lures and fly fishing.

River Swimming

Enjoy the cool mountain fresh water of the Timbarra river during warmer months. While much of the river is not very deep there are deeper holes which are great for swimming close to the cottage.

4 X 4 Driving Adventures

Use Timbarra Hideaway as your base to explore bush tracks. We love the drive to Nunniong high plains where you may see wild Brumbies and fat cows grazing. Or try Scorpion Creek track for more advanced drivers. Some roads are closed from July to October.

Trout Fishing

The Timbarra river is a popular trout fishing river. Start 40 meters from the cottage or venture up to the high plains where the river is a small meandering stream wandering through the plain at Nunnet.

Horse Riding

As with four wheel driving the many bush tracks are beautiful for horse riding. Bring your own horses and an electric fence to contain them.

Spring Creek Walk Buchan

Buchan Cave reserve also has the Spring Creek walk. This 1.5 hour walk takes you up past Buchan Caves Limestone and Snowy River Volcanics then down along Spring Creek through river bank rainforest. ( May be closed for a few months due to bush fire damage).
