Additional Information

Sleeping:
Bedroom one has a queen bed and private balcony. Bedroom two is a mezzanine with a curtain divider & two single beds. The lounge has a pull out couch.

Eating:
The compact kitchen has all you need to self cater with an oven, toast maker, blender, fondue set, and pop-corn machine (and pop-corn!).

Entertainment:
We have kids and adults books, games, a smart TV, DVD player (yes we have Lord of The Rings!) and a hammock to chill in. Each year we add little touches and surprises.

Outside:
Hook the hammock across the deck and relax with a book.
Sit back and enjoy the stars in the outside bath. Please note the hot water cylinder will fill the tub but you may want to have a shower the other end of the day!

Wifi:
We are trialling free wifi from Dec 2024

Other bits:
Relax in the hot shower or stretch out on a yoga mat after your adventure. There is plenty of chill space amongst the trees on the front or back deck.

Peace & space:
The A frame is set on a private hill surrounded by trees and with a view of the mountain. There is small swing and a trampoline on the site which sits in a subdivision with two lakes.

Location:
The Chalet is near the bottom of the mountain road, head up to the ski field or wander around the many walks in this World Heritage National Park.

The chalet is an easy ten minute walk to 'The Junction' where you will find The Powderkeg known for its extensive drink lists, hearty food and open fires. It also has a hot pool & often plays live sports games as well as hosting bands and DJ's especially in the busy winter season. Ring ahead for breakfast, lunch & dinner hours.

At the nearby Railway Station Opus Fresh has locally made merino wear and excellent coffee.

Ohakune township is a 20 minute walk away and has a variety of cafes and restaurants, a New World supermarket and a nearby carrot playground with zip lines.

Our favourite stops in town are TCB for ski gear and rental bikes, Luca especially likes the speedy E bikes. But his real favourite spot is Vertigo rock-climbing with self-belay, the whole family or friend group can climb together. Call the super friendly Jeremy and team to book in.

Loved the cosy and warm cabin, really nice and quiet location, surrounded by beautiful trees and very close to the train station, where there are lots of options for food and drinks. Spa was a bonus, ...and being so close to nature, you’re never far away from brilliant excursions and day activities. Would definitely come back again.

Adventure seeker & lover of the outdoors I love sharing our holiday home that my dad built. By staying with us you are helping keep this little gem for Luca & his sister to visit their favourite holiday spot. Please send me any feedback as we love to make the place better each year. My two kids love heading to Ohakune for the brilliant skiing, forest adventures, bike tracks & the climbing wall. They are also big fans of pool & nacho's at the Powderkeg after a day of; racing each other on the zip lines at the carrot park, discovering new bike trails or speeding down the slopes.

Cycling The Old Coach Road

One of the most popular MTB trails in the area, the Old Coach Road literally rides through history (though you can walk it too!) With beautiful old viaducts, historic roads and lush regenerating native forest, it's a trail with something for everyone. We chose to ride in the more downhill direction (from Horopito to Ohakune) but it can be tackled a few different ways, just make sure to organise transport from one end to the other!

Mangawhero Falls

While driving up Ohakune Mountain road we made a quick stop at Mangawhero Falls. This 5 minute walk offers excellent views of the 28-meter high falls and down into the valley. Fun fact, this location was also featured in the Lord of the Rings films where Gollum catches a fish.

Sunset At Turoa Ski Field Carpark

The perfect place for sunset with epic views! Just a short drive up the mountain from Ohakune town centre, we took snacks with us and watched the colours light up the evening sky.

Hike To Lake Surprise

With a bit of a break in the weather, we decided to head on a wee hike to Lake Surprise, to get out and stretch our legs! A quick drive to the Turoa Ski Field and we were off on the trail. Hopping down the Cascades (A bit sketchy in the wet), we went past Mangaturuturu Hut and were at the lake in about 2 hours! On the way back, we stopped off at the Hut for a spot of lunch and a warm-up beside the fire before heading back.
