Kathryn and Steve were wonderful and very accomodating hosts. Our stay was during poor weather but it was cozy inside and the various cooking and coffee/tea amenities were very good. It was extremely ...picturesque during clear spells and I was able to take gorgeous photos of the swans and ducks on the lake, and the surrounding hills.

Wowser!!
We have been exploring beautiful Aotearoa for the last couple of years now, and this by far is our favourite spot!! The mouri/essence of this place is one that you will never forget. It is so... well set up, showing the true manaaitanga/hospitality of our country. We stayed two nights and wish it had been for a week. Be prepared for a good farm track with your vehicle, but apart from that this place was MINT!!

Steve and I have lived in this very isolated farming community for over 25 years, he has provided 4x4 Polaris Lighthouse tours and Horse Treks for over 15 years. The newly constructed Lakeside Retreat is a rare look at Pouto's biodiversity that gives visitors an experience beyond just accomodation, to view nature at it most rarest while providing tranquil privacy.

Kahuparere Adventures offer a thrilling 4X4 tour through Pouto’s epic sand dunes, coastal forests, rugged landscapes out to the iconic Pouto Lighthouse. This was such a fun and unforgettable way to explore the area!
Guided Horse Treks
We joined a horseback riding tour with Kahuparere Adventures which took us along a tranquil lakeside with gorgeous views over the surrounding countryside. This is an awesome relaxing way to explore the area.
Visit Poutu Wharf
A scenic wharf overlooking the Kaipara Harbour. If you're lucky you might see seals on the beach.
Visit Poutu Lighthouse
The historic Pouto Lighthouse is one of the oldest wooden lighthouses in the country. The track to get there is a 12km return beach walk along the remote and windswept Pouto Point, at the northern head of the Kaipara Harbour. It generally takes 3-4hours return, or alternatively you can drive your 4WD along this beach out to the lighthouse.
Visit Piroa Falls
A hidden gem waterfall at the end of a short 10 minute trail in the Waipu Gorge scenic reserve. This is perfect spot for swimming in summer.
