The Back Beach Shack – Portsea

Walk straight from the gate to Portsea’s iconic Back Beach.
A classic beach shack with modern comforts, sea breezes and new balconies.
Unbeatable location — enjoy Portsea without the price tag.

Perfectly positioned at the very edge of Portsea’s iconic Back Beach, The Back Beach Shack is a relaxed, no-fuss holiday home made for beach days, salty hair and easy living. This original coastal home blends classic beach-house charm with thoughtful modern updates, all in an unbeatable walk-to-the-beach location.

Step through the private back gate and straight onto the walking track leading directly to Back Beach Road — dump the car, grab your towel and enjoy daily beach walks without ever needing to drive.

The home sleeps up to nine guests across four bedrooms, with three queen beds and a tri-bunk, making it ideal for families or groups. Two bedrooms are located downstairs and two upstairs, offering flexibility and space to spread out.

Upstairs features a refreshed bathroom and a new split-system air conditioner providing both heating and cooling, while downstairs retains its original beach-house charm with a second shower and toilet. In total, the home offers two bathrooms and two toilets for convenience.

The redesigned kitchen is well equipped with modern appliances and everything you need for easy holiday meals, while the rest of the home embraces its coastal roots with relaxed interiors and Slim Aarons artwork throughout, setting a timeless, seaside tone.

Two new balconies invite you to unwind, catch the sea breeze and take in glimpses of the surrounding coastal landscape. Even on the warmest summer days, the home is naturally cooled by a beautiful sea breeze that flows right through.

Unpretentious, comfortable and brilliantly located, The Back Beach Shack offers the chance to enjoy everything Portsea is known for — without the price tag. It’s all about location, simplicity and the joy of being steps from the sand.

Le Capucin Cafe

This cafe lives right next to the beach. You can have some delicious food, take a coffee away and walk along the pier. There were local swimming competitions the morning we watched from the shore. A great local spot.

Point Nepean Walk

A short drive to Portsea from the accommodation you will find the Port Nepean National Park, which is a super nice walk on a sunny day, I think it took around three hours (14.5km). There are some great views and crystal clear blue waters to be seen. We walked along the coast on the way there and then returned through the bush. Be sure to check out the fort at the end and make your way through some of the tunnels.

After travelling all over Victoria I'm glad to be the guide to my friends and during this escape, I decided to introduce them to this epic spot. I particularly love the old buildings around Port Napean, such a nostalgic feeling walking through the area. Also, a great spot for fine art film photography ;)
