Located just outside of Myrtleford, in the gourmet region of the high country, Cortes Cottage offers a tranquil country escape. Set in one of Australia’s oldest operating Walnut farms 'Valley Nut Groves' and with views of Mount Buffalo the cottage is an ideal place to relax, unwind and get back to nature.

The Ski Fields of Mount Hotham and Falls Creek are only a one hour and half drive away, and with numerous wineries and boutique farms close by, Cortes Cottage is an ideal place from which to explore the region. If we are around, we are more than happy to give you a tour of the Walnut Farm and its processing plant.

The region is home to some of Victoria’s best inland fishing, as well as having numerous bushwalking and mountain biking tracks to explore. Cortes Cottage is the ideal location to get outside and explore the High Country.

The cottage was recently renovated to a very high standard, and although rustic in appearance, it has a luxurious modern interior, with all of the modern conveniences that you would expect from a boutique country escape.

The period weatherboard cottage has an inviting north facing polished concrete verandah where you can sit, relax and enjoy the fresh mountain air. It is the perfect setting to cook and dine together, either with friends or alone, while enjoying some of the regions wine. If it is too cold outside then why not sit by the original brick fireplace and warm up.

We loved Cortes Cottage. A beautiful property, surrounded by Walnut groves and farmland, it was a peaceful, relaxing place to unwind and take in nature. Far enough away from town to feel like you were... in the middle of nowhere but actually only just a short drive or cycle into Myrtleford. Ronaldo is a gratuitous host and encouraged us to freely explore the surrounding Walnut groves and extensive property, he also provided recommendations for local towns, restaurants and things to do.
We will come back again for sure.

A lovely cottage on a beautiful block with river access. We had a small issue that was quickly resolved when we arrived with great service. The cottage is very comfortable. We were however surprised t...hat there was a wedding on the other nearby property and various parties associated with that distracted from the quaintness of the property.

Fishing

The Ovens River has a very good mix of brown and rainbow trout upstream of Bright, and downstream of Bright the rainbows tend to thin out and the river becomes more dominated by brown trout.

The Murmungee Lookout

This picturesque lookout delivers stunning views and an area to enjoy a picnic and take in the peaceful surrounds. Please note - it is difficult in wet weather to approach.

Mt Stanley Summit

Head to the Mt Stanley Summit and enjoy you amazing views of the surrounding area. The approach is via a dry weather road only.

Woolshed Falls

The Falls are a popular destination for nature lovers and history buffs. The area was once the centre of one of the richest goldfield’s in Australia, where up to 8,000 prospectors camped along the banks of Spring Creek, in search of their fortune.

The Gorge

Spring Creek Cascades or 'The Gorge' as it is locally known, are a ten-minute drive north from Beechworth, where you can view the cascading falls, have a swim, enjoy a leisurely picnic or take a self-guided walk around the alluvial gold workings. An observation deck provides views to falls and the valley below, which is particularly spectacular after heavy rainfalls.

Mount Pilot Lookout

Take the short 300m-stepped climb to a surprising 360-degree view of surrounding forest and farmland. The Mount Pilot Lookout Track is reached from the Chiltern-Beechworth Rd, turning off at the Old Coach Rd, then to the Mt Pilot Summit Picnic Area car park. It is then a short walk to the Lookout up a formed track.
