The rural community of Buchan is located in the beautiful East Gippsland region of Victoria. An area renowned for its caves, limestone cliffs and the Snowy River, Buchan has a rich history with fossils and bones of creatures found in the mega fauna period some 10,000 years ago.

Matilda's Cottage is an 1880's Old Settlers Cottage situated on a property with beautiful 360 degree views of the Buchan Valley. Step back in time and reconnect with nature. Take in the views with a wine from your balcony after a day exploring Buchan and the Snowy River National Park.

What a cosy cottage and in a beautiful setting! We had delightful time staying in Matilda’s Cottage. There has been a lot of thought put into ensuring it has everything a visitor might need including ...games (board and outdoor), a huge range of dvds, a fully stocked kitchen and electric blankets and column heaters (which you need in the bedrooms during winter as it’s really cold in the countryside). The bed was comfy, bathroom and kitchens big and a fireplace made for a cosy lounge (the owner even had the fire going when we arrived which was delightful). Two lovely outdoor spaces (one with a bbq and fire pit) and no light pollution mean you can clearly see the star filled night sky! The Buchan caves are a few minute drive away. A great family or couples get away!

Moon Hill Walk

Set out on this short walk that leads to viewpoints overlooking the reserve and the Buchan Valley. The trail passes by Moon Cave, so bring a torch so you can explore the entrance. Follow the track past the Devils Punchbowl, a large collapsed cave system, and up to the top of the hill. From here you can see the extent of the exposed limestone on both sides of the valley in the reserve. Continue on a little further to the lookout and be rewarded by beautiful views of the Buchan Valley.

Buchan Caves

Take a leisurely walk in the Caves Reserve admiring the native plants, animals and exotic trees and then join guides from Parks Victoria on a guided tour of Royal Cave or Fairy Cave. Artefacts of Aboriginal occupation from 18,000 years ago are still visible in the Buchan Caves, one of the oldest Ice Age cave sites in southeast Australia.

Kayaking On The Snowy Or Buchan Rivers

Go kayaking or white water rafting on the Snowy River. The river is renowned for canoeing and rafting, and this remote park is ideal for those who appreciate magnificent forests, rugged gorges and wild landscapes. Or kayak the Buchan River which flows through the property.
