Enjoy the peaceful seclusion of the Church at Tantawangalo. Our beautiful 1905 brick gothic revival style church has been sensitively converted in a luxury retreat perfect for creating your next holiday memories.
We lovingly restored the church and look forward to sharing it with you. Our unique home is a great place to get away from it all, whether it's to completely unwind or to explore the vast array of activities the spectacular sapphire coast and hinterland has to offer. We hope you enjoy it too.
Walk through the dramatic entrance hall with its original arched timber double doors into the expansive open plan fully equipped kitchen, dining and living room with its soaring 8 metre wooden ceilings, original stained-glass windows and floor to ceiling steel bifold doors which let light to flood into the living areas, plus a large wood burning fire for those colder evenings. The original vestry now houses the luxurious bathroom, with large free-standing bath where you can unwind taking in the view of the adjacent reserve through the original arched doorway, plus there's an oversize shower. The bedroom is more intimate space situated in the raised vestibule off the living area, the queen size bed entices you to sleep with quality linen and handmade merino wool blankets.

CHURCH DETAILS
The church offers unique boutique accommodation for those wanting a getaway with a difference. You'll find all the modern conveniences to make your stay comfortable and relaxing whilst still retaining the original features of the building.
Whilst the church does have limited phone reception we have made the decision to maintain it as a relaxing getaway destination without the distraction of technology. You will find a range of books, games and puzzles to entertain, however, we encourage you to relax and reconnect. There is no television, however mobile hot spotting from your phone to your laptop is possible should you need a quick technology fix! The church is set up at as a place to switch off and escape day to day life.
THINGS TO NOTE:
This is our home and we ask that you treat it with care and respect.
- We do not allow parties or large gatherings.
- No smoking, vaping or drug use.
- We are pet friendly however we charge a small fee of $40 to cover additional cleaning. Please advise if you will be bringing your pet(s). We ask that you bring your pet's beds and bowls and don't allow them directly on the furniture and beds or leave them unattended.
- Whilst the church is an ideal couples retreat an additional single bed is available on the mezzanine. There is an additional nightly charge of $20 for adults/children above the 2 standard guests, this covers the time taken for additional laundry and cleaning.
No charging of EVs. There are charging stations in Bega and Merimbula. If you urgently need to charge your EV this needs to be agreed with the host and must only take place between 10pm and 7am. An additional charge of $30 per charge will be applied to your booking. Any unauthorised charging will be charged at $50 per charge post stay.
- We have open stairs to the mezzanine, so children require supervision.
Please respect our natural resources:
- Our water supply come from the rain collected from our roof. As we are still in drought conditions we ask that you use our water with consideration.
- We supply timber, but ask that you are thoughtful with your use.
- We don't have a rubbish collection service so please be mindful with your waste and recycle where possible. We have labelled bins for general waste, recycling (paper, cans, glass, plastics and cardboard boxes - please break these down to save space) and 10c bottles and cans.
Churches have idiosyncrasies, and we have converted the property to retain the building's original features:
- There are steps to enter the property, so it is not suitable for those with limited mobility or young children.
- The steps to the bed are narrow and under height so care is required.

We had an incredible stay at The Church. What a gorgeous building in the most stunning surroundings. A beautiful place to reset and reconnect. Marie was absolutely lovely. All the small touches added ...to our stay and we loved exploring Candelo, Pambula and Merimbula. We hope to return again one day 😊

Had an awesome stay and the hosts were lovely! Building and grounds are truly stunning and so well done. Would recommend picking up a extra bag of firewood though because in winter god wont be keeping you warm in the church!

We absolutely loved our stay at the church!
Thoughtfully renovated, this stay was such an amazing find for my partner and I who were seeking somewhere quiet, relaxed and a little bit special and this ...ticked all the boxes. We made use of the same useful fire inside and on the second night, lit the outside fire and roasted marshmallows.
Breakfast and dinner was had in the beautiful little town of Candelo at the general store and pub with a quick dip at six mile creek before heading back for a hot relaxing bath at the church.
100% recommend this amazing stay.

I live in Sydney with my husband Simon, daughter and rescue greyhound.
We have a passion for old buildings and interior design. We have completed most of the work on both our church conversions ourselves and are excited to share these unique homes with our guests.

Star Gazing At The Church
Light the firepit, grab a fleece blanket and your favourite beverage to spend the evening star gazing or satellite spotting outside your front door. We have amazing views of the milky way. Practice your photography skills and capture a picture of the church with the milky ways as a backdrop!
Meet The Locals
We have visits from a wealth of local native animals. Echidnas, possums and kangaroos can often be seen in the adjoining reserve. We also have visits from black cockatoos, king parrots, owls and tawny frogmouths. In the evening watch the microbats and try to spot a sugar glider.

Tantawangalo Creek
The scenic creek is moments away, paddle in the crystal clear water or in summer find a waterhole to relax and cool off. Spot turtles and other native wildlife. The main water supply for the Bega area, it has only run dry 4x in 100 years, most recently last year.
Cycle The Gravel Roads Of Tantawangalo
Stretching for kilometres, Tantawangalo Mountain Road offers gravel-riding bliss, passing by paddocks filled with cattle, small orchards and gorgeous country cottages.
Candelo General Store And Cafe
Candelo General Store and Cafe is a bustling weekend brunch hub, with visitors enjoying post-mountain biking coffees and friendly catchups in the sun-filled courtyard. The breakfast servings are extremely generous and extremely delicious.
Drive Scenic Tantawangalo Mountain Road
Drive from Candelo along the newly sealed Tantawangalo Mountain Road which meanders through breathtaking countryside. Then head onwards along the unsealed road which winds up through the bush of South East Forests National Park. Take a break at Six Mile Creek and take a short walk to view the waterfalls.
Myrtle Mountain Lookout
Located off Myrtle Mountain Road in the South East Forests NP, the lookout offers expansive views across the rolling hills of the Bega Valley to the north and Candelo and Wolumla to the east. Bring a picnic lunch or binoculars for bird watching.
Grab An Award Winning Meat Pie At Bemboka Pie Shop
If you're heading back towards Cooma and Canberra from the coast, make sure to stop in at Bemboka Pie shop for a good, old fashioned meat pie (with veggie options available too). Bemboka offers up old-school farm charm and makes you feel like you've jumped back in time by accident.
