Fly Fishing
The Howqua River is a Victorian Heritage river and a fly fishing icon. On this stretch of water, billionaires tangle lines with local anglers. Beginners can learn the art of casting, lure-fishing and stream craft from experienced guides. While serious anglers can stake out a quiet spot beside a High Country stream or lake and test their fishing skills with fly, lure or bait. You might even glimpse a local fishing on horseback – word has it horses don’t scare off the fish.
Rivers
For some the lure of the High Country is not in our sweeping alpine vistas, but in the iconic mountain rivers and lakes. The Goulburn, Jamieson, Howqua and Delatite Rivers flow through the picturesque countryside. Find a shady spot under a Willow for a picnic and cool off in the pristine waters in summer. Floating around on a lilo or tubing is a popular past time.
Horse Riding
You’ll discover high mountain trails, icy mountain streams and the sense of peace that comes from bonding with your horse and the land. Feel the exhilaration of cantering through High Country clearings and enjoy the magical swirl of snowgums at sunset.
Snow Sports
With over 300 hectares of skiable terrain, there is something to appeal to all levels of ability. Our runs range from the wide beginner’s slopes of Bourke St and Burnt Hut Spur, to the challenge of our black runs like Chamois.
Bushwalking In Summer
Go bushwalking in the High Country and you’ll feel the majesty of the Australian bush melt into your heart. The ancient rolling hills and towering eucalypts are unlike any other place on earth. Surrounded by State Forests and National Parks, Mansfield Mt Buller offers breath-taking hiking and bushwalking for all fitness levels. Bushwalks range in duration from under an hour to multiple days, but no matter how far you hike the tranquillity of the Australian bush is bound to ease worries and enliven the spirit.
And for a really unique experience, you can visit one of the mountain huts scattered through the High Country hills. So head out and go hiking along crystal clear rivers or stride up a mountain peak. One footstep at a time, you’ll reconnect with nature… and yourself.
