The House at Smoko is a spectacular retreat, nestled on 28 acres between the picturesque towns of Bright and Harrietville in Victoria’s High Country. The retreat is set on two acres of wonderland gardens, 16 acres of grazing land and 12 acres of bush lead down to the crystal clear water of the Ovens River which gently flows along the boundary.
The House at Smoko is just 10 minutes out of the Great Alpine Valleys most famous town of Bright, 30 minutes from Mt Hotham ski resort and one hour from Falls Creek. Set among a garden of towering wild Elm Oak trees and with dramatic views of Mt Feathertop and the Smoko Valley, the House is a rich tapestry of craftsmanship, beauty and history.
Initially inspired by the mountain cattlemen’s huts and tobacco drying kilns which punctuate the local landscape, The House at Smoko’s also reflects the works of Christopher Alexander, a noted US architect and scholar who formulated a “pattern language” of ways houses can be designed to support sociable places.

The most incredible house, We had the best time.
If you think the house looks good online, it's even better in real life.
Hands down one of the best stays we have done.

Fly Fishing
The Ovens River flows along the boundary of the property. The local Ovens and Buckland Rivers and their tributaries provide good fly fishing with the best times being from October to December. Exactly when the great spring fly fishing starts will vary according to river levels, the temperature of the water and the spring snow thaws.

Adventures Nearby
Here are some details about the adventures nearby. Refer to the map for their location.
Kayaking
With the Ovens and Buckland Rivers perfect for water sports, there are a number of operators in the region who can take you on a kayaking tour of the waterways. Tumble over rapids and forge your way through the pristine streams. For the first timers expert tour operators run beginners Kayaking lessons.
Mountain Bike Riding
The MTB trail network at Bright offers a unique mix of riding opportunity for beginner through to expert. The trails are mostly hand-built and have been developed and improved over many years. The area encompasses everything from flat fire-road to incredibly steep and technical climbs and descents, from novice to expert; you will find a track to challenge you.
Mystic Mountain
Mystic Park is a community-run bike park with some of the states best shred lines you can find regardless of how rad you're looking to get. Normally 3 hours drive from our home in Melbourne it was a real treat to have this park virtually in our backyard for a week. Unless you're looking to earn your turns by peddling the 6km climbing trail I highly recommend booking a shuttle pass with Blue Dirt Shuttle for the day to get those extra lines in.
Sixpence Coffee
It didn't take long for the new cool kids and legendary bean roasters Sixpence to claim the 'king of the coffee' crown in town. Roasting their own unique blends on location in Bright. Located in the heart of town.
Tomahawks Bar Eatery
A trip to Tomahawks quickly became a staple on our holidays since it opened in 2016. Serving up some of the finest cocktails, burgers and share plates in the valley. Located in Bright, we ordered up a feast for dinner on the deck by the fire with the fam. Obviously, after a cheeky post-ride entree before heading back to the house with the banquet.
Bright Waterpark
Located in the heart of Bright along the banks of the Ovens River that flows through town. On any day the sun shines you'll find families swimming in the river and squealing up a storm in the Splashpark or speeding down the waterslide that recently opened back up after a 10-year hiatus.
There's also a pretty epic playground and large picnic grounds with BBQs and facilities dotted along the riverbank. Highly recommend it if you have tiny humans that want to (safely) explore some beautiful mountain water on a warm day.
