Martha Mine Pit Rim Walk
Located in the Waihi township, Martha Mine Pit Rim Walk begins at the iconic Pumphouse opposite the information centre. It's an easy, four-kilometre loop around the rim of this impressive open-cast mine. You'll pass through some sections of native bush and past some historical mining relics with interesting mining facts dotted along the way.
Bike A Section Of The Hauraki Rail Trail
The Hauraki Rail Trail is an awesome easy cycle trail suitable for all levels of fitness and ability. The full journey takes approximately five days to complete, however exploring a section of the trail is great option for a day excursion. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants along the way too.
Owharoa Falls
These stunning waterfalls are easily accessed from the main road on the way through the Karangahake gorge. Even in the drizzle, the falls were stunning and the lack of crowds made for a beautiful private spectacle.
Hike The Trig Walk
The trail is a three-kilometre return walk up a hill, mainly through native NZ bush (making it an ideal walk at any time of the day). Once you reach the top, you will enjoy the spectacular views of Waihi and across the Bay of Plenty. The walk is suitable for both children and dogs.
Explore The Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway
Karangahake Gorge sits between the Coromandel Peninsula and the Kaimai Ranges, and you'll drive along it if you're heading south on State Highway 2. There are a number of different walks, waterfalls and swimming holes in the area depending on what type of adventure you're looking for.
Karangahake Gorge
Take in the stunning scenery as you drive through the breathtaking Karangahake Gorge but make sure you also park the car and explore the walkways and old tunnels, to discover the rich history hidden in the deep valleys. A popular bike trail is the Hauraki Rail Trail - one of the most stunning stretches of river in the country.
