Sunrise Paradise

Adventure in Thames, Waikato, NZ
At the end of a cobblestone path, the Tui Sunrise Cabin sat high up on the hillside, waiting to greet us with an amazing view of the Kauaeranga valley. We couldn’t wait to enjoy it and spent our evening relaxing on the deck and eating slices of warm freshly-baked bread and homemade jelly provided by our wonderful host.

A beautiful sunrise greeted us after a restful sleep, and we took our time getting ready for the day. We then made our way into Thames to explore the Saturday morning markets and browse through the endless stalls and wide selection of hand-made goods.

Later, we stopped at a gorgeous local swimming hole along the Kauaeranga River, where the cool water was just right to beat the heat of the day. As dusk fell, our little abode was the perfect place to cozy up and read a good book or watch a movie.

On our final morning, we woke refreshed and ready for adventure. We headed further into the valley to start our hike up the Kauaeranga Kauri Trail to the summit of the Pinnacles for sunset. Is there a better way to end a weekend in the Coromandel, than from its’ highest point with a view that stretches to the horizon in all directions? We didn’t think so!

The best sunset location in the Coromandel. The Pinnacles hike is challenging but well worth the effort for the spectacular views at the summit (759m). If you don't want to hike back in the dark, you can book to stay a night at the hut or camp.

This awesome swimming spot was recommended to us by a local and we were not disappointed. The water was perfect and clear and you can park on the roadside making it just a 2 minute walk to the river. The perfect stop after a long hike.

This popular walk takes you up to the summit of the Pinnacles (759m) where you’ll be treated to spectacular views across the Coromandel. The track is steep in places, approx. 7km and takes around 3 – 3.5hrs one-way to the summit.

While staying at the Tui Sunrise Cabin, we were able to visit the many chickens and cute ducklings on the property.

Held every Saturday from 8am – 12pm, the Thames Markets are a great place to pick up locally grown fruit and veg, plants, homemade preserves and much more. We enjoyed our morning wandering around the various stalls.
