Bluff House has an indoor and 2 person outdoor 2-soaking tub, 2 1/2 baths, 2 bedrooms and a queen sofa sleeper, a huge deck with an unobstructed 180+ degree Puget Sound and Mt. Rainier, a fully stocked kitchen, outdoor patio and grilling area, and outdoor fireplace, 3 indoor gas fireplaces, a fabulous 1000 feet of private beach with picnic tables, hammocks, barbecue, curtained sleeping pavilion at the shore (sleeps 2 more people, weather permitting!), w beach fire pits and an outdoor shower, sink and portable toilet at the beach.
Four more people can stay in The Loft, which is located right next door and may be rented separately if you wish to have the entire Bluff House property to yourselves -- check availability of the Loft & Beach to see if it is available during the time you are interested in visiting Bluff House by clicking on my profile photo. The adjoining 40 forested acres with nature trails has a huge barn with resident horses and three additional cottages (Forest Cabin, Wildwood Studio, The Coach House at Wildwood and the "Camp in Peaceful Seclusion" field area to accommodate your entire group. (For further information about the additional cottages, click on my profile photo.)
The gorgeous house is yours to enjoy, as is the 1000 ft of pristine, private beach. Pt. Robinson Lighthouse is a short stroll along the water or through the forest, and a bit farther afield is the Maury Island Marine Park for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, etc. There are 1000 ft. of shoreline to explore and enjoy, as well as the bulkhead area that is shared space with the Loft.
The base rate is for two guests. Guests 4-6 are an additional rate. Maximum occupancy in the house is 6 people at any time. Guests other than those registered overnight require special permission, so please let us know if you want to have visitors or host an event. Up to 23 overnight guests can be accommodated in the cottages on the estate.
The exteriors and interiors have been featured in The Seattle Times Pacific Magazine, Country Living Magazine, Sunset books, in catalogs (Cutter & Buck most recently), and in film including BBC productions and Anthony Bordain's "No Reservations" (aired Nov. 19, 2017 on the Pacific Northwest show). Celebrities have chosen to be married on the property - it is truly a stunning place to be! We are very familiar with how to coordinate details to assure your time here is a success and exactly as you want it to be.
The loft shares the upper yard - you still have plenty of privacy, but you may want to book both places if you have family or friends who want to join you.
There is a washer/dryer in the barn for guest use, or we can do laundry for you for $10/load. There is a closet exclusively for guest use. We stay in the house some of the time so our "stuff" is in it, but we turn it into a hotel experience for our guests. It is fully equipped, impeccably clean and tidy, and ready for you to relax and enjoy when you arrive. We live nearby and are available 24/7 should you need anything during your stay.
Please note that the base rate is for 2 guests. Additional guests are extra. The Loft is nearby, and is a wonderful addition to the Bluff House should you have family and friends that you want to join you and have their own private space.
My daughter is earning money to support her horse habit by hosting an Experience which introduces people of all ages to Starbuck, the miniature horse, who lives at our barn. Please let us know if you'd like to meet him. He can also travel for birthday celebrations, etc.
For safety reasons children under 10 are not allowed in Bluff House. The cabinets are not childproof, there are open ponds in the yard, and unmarked hazards. Animals are not allowed in the house.
We are in the big house on the property next door, so we are available should you need anything or have any questions. Chickens, ducks, rabbits, horses and Saussi (who might bark at you when you arrive but is very friendly) live on the property. We will be up at the coop twice a day to put the birds out/in. If you'd like fresh eggs, let us know as we usually have PLENTY.
Take a look at the photos of the property to see the layout and location of the Loft in relation to the Bluff House. There is a shared upper yard area and the bulkhead (130' long) has two fire pits, picnic tables, etc. that you can share with the Loft guests or you can walk a bit to the east (left) and find solitude and privacy and have a small fire there below the high tide line (assuming there is no burn ban for poor air quality which rarely occurs). PLEASE CHECK WITH US PRIOR TO LIGHTING ANY OUTDOOR FIRES BETWEEN JUNE AND OCTOBER.
If you are used to sleeping with blackout shades, you might want to bring an eye-mask or sleep in the second bedroom, which is darker than the master. The house is southern exposure and has lots of big windows so it is light and bright.
Rural, quiet, peaceful and "away from it all" is how guests have described Bluff House. No neighboring houses are visible, except the Loft. Vashon is rural, mellow and quiet yet just a 20 minute ferry ride from Seattle or Tacoma.
Come by car so you can enjoy all that the island has to offer. A short 20 minute ferry ride across Puget Sound from the Fauntleroy (West Seattle), Pt. Defiance (Tacoma), or Southworth (from the Olympic Peninsula) ferry runs will get you to Vashon, and the property is 20 minutes from the ferry landings. Search Washington State Ferries on line for fare and schedule information.
The house was originally constructed in the 1930's and the adjoining property, Vashon Field and Pond, was a 40 acre cattle farm. We have lived on the property for 31 years and have preserved original features of the house, so it has a wonderful "feel" and "patina". It is a very comfortable home in an incredible location!
The Bluff House at Vashon Field and Pond is not suitable for toddlers, but is fine for non-mobile infants. If the loft is rented simultaneously, children 5-12 are welcome. The house is not childproof: ponds, chemicals within reach, fragile decor, etc.
- One small, mellow dog may be allowed with a $100 non-refundable pet fee. Pets must be leashed in the yard at all times for the sake of free-range rabbits, ducks, chickens, etc. and may not be left unattended in the house.
- Quiet hours (no outdoor music unless you have rented the Loft also) are 8 pm- 11 am. Please move conversations from the east patio to the deck after 8 pm. Use of the deck is fine as long as there is no music or loud voices that will disturb the Loft guests.
- Please remove your shoes before coming inside the house.
- There is a detailed house manual with alternate contact numbers, emergency info, etc. on the kitchen counter. Please READ IT when you first arrive. We are also happy to give you a quick tour via phone - just call when you arrive.
- Help yourself to condiments, coffee, tea, spices, etc. Please just let us know if something gets used up so we can replace it.
- Please avoid walking up and down 43rd to minimize contact with neighbors that share the driveway.
-Not suitable for toddlers ( infants that aren't yet mobile are fine) or kids under 8. There are open ponds in the yard, non-childproof decor and cupboards, glass within reach of little hands, etc. The Coach House, Forest Cabin and Wildwood Studio are toddler friendly. Clicking on my profile photo will bring up those listings.
-We have a dog, as well as free-range chickens, rabbits, & ducks in the yard.
- Current policies do not allow parties or events.
Nearby Vashon Field and Pond is an option should you need more space. Please contact Lisa before planning to have more than just registered guests on the property.

The 5 acre Cottonwood property was established in 1890 as a farm for growing strawberries, cucumbers and other vegetables and transported to Seattle via mosquito fleet ships. In the early 20th century the ships were replaced by trucks that crossed the water on ferries to and from Seattle. Today, the island is still accessed by ferries that run from Pt. Defiance (Tacoma), Southworth (Kitsap Peninsula) and Fauntleroy (West Seattle).
The Cottonwood Studio (sleeps 2-3) and Cottonwood Farmhouse (sleeps up to 9) may be rented simultaneously for up to 12 guests at a time, and there is camping on the back portion of the 5 acres available if you have a larger groups or event to host.
