Additional Information

Callignee 2 operates on eco friendly / sustainable living principles and is completely “ 100 % off the grid” Meaning: (not on the electricity grid) and therefore prides itself on its energy efficiency, self-sustainability and total independence. Rain water is harvested onsite, solar power harnessed and waste from the home goes into a Biolytic Blackwater system sunken into the earth. Callignee II is designed so that every room enjoys the north sun.

The kitchen, the node and heart of the home opens to the north directly connecting the pool and gardens so that family and guests can be catered for, either outside at the pool and its island bench servery, or inside at the dinning table or lounge room. The open plan shares a double sided fire place with water jacket ensuring all its energy is used. You will find everything you need to cook up a storm, high quality pots, pans and cooking Utensils, we also have the pantry stocked with tea, hot chocolate, salt, pepper, suger & spices, oils all the pesky things you don’t want to have to bring on holiday!

The west elevation of the living space brings the huge eucalypts into the home. Callignee II is a multi level construction with the main bedroom on the lower level with a kingsize bed leading into artistic masterpiece ensuite featuring an open glass double head shower that offers no privacy but invites you to become one with the surrounding.

The mezzanine level houses the second guest bed and a study nook — it’s a quirky space that takes advantage of the spectacular views out to the harsh and beautiful landscape. Blurring the separation of indoor and outdoor living with bi-fold doors, the dwelling interior is as minimalist and contemporary as the exterior. The walls and ceilings are Corten rust sheet and rust paints. The lines are clean and true to the elements that form them. Recycled timber from Melbourne's Princess Pier forms the ceiling of the bedroom, bathroom vanity, dining table and some flooring.

The centrally located kitchen with state of the art European 5 star energy appliances has an island bench made from concrete & steel plus a tilt window that overlooks the pool area perfect for balmy dinner parties.

The 19 meter lap pool can be viewed though a massive lounge window that also forms a part of the pool wall and doubles as a luxurious water feature. The home is surrounded by hand selected, strategically placed granite boulders, there is a pond with stepping stone access to the home or overhead there is a suspension bridge that accesses the top level.

Guests have exclusive access to the entire 5 acres property. We offer all our guests complimentary organic shampoo, conditioners and soaps. Please note: Non organic products cannot be used at the property due to the impact on the Biolytic Blackwater system and the overall impact on our environment. Please keep in mind this home is an eco friendly 100% off the grid home, the property is reliant on the state of the art solar panels and battery system along with our 40,000lt water tank.

We kindly asks guests to come to our retreat with a sustainable mind and attitude and take care of our property.

Corrigan Suspension Bridge

Discovered by Ty
First thing on Saturday we decided to head off to Tarra Bulga National Park to check out the Corrigan Suspension bridge and go for a hike. The bridge is only a short walk away (3mins) from the Bulga Picnic Area carpark. It is set amongst some thick rainforest and over Mack’s Creek. Thankfully, we were the only ones there (be sure to go early in the morning to have the place to yourself). The views were absolutely beautiful and it was a welcome moment of complete peace and quiet....

Fern Tree Gully Track

Discovered by Ty
If you continue on along the Corrigan Suspension Bridge, there is a well marked hiking trail that meanders through the lush rainforest and takes you back to the carpark in a giant scenic loop of sorts. The walk took us about 40 minutes and was the perfect way to start the day. We didn’t see any other walkers on the track, which made it even more special, as we were able to soak in the sheer serenity of our surroundings. Highly recommend this walk!...

Tarra Bulga National Park

Discovered by Ty
We were told by a local that the drive to Tarra Bulga National Park was a sight in itself…and they were not lying. The drive is about 30 minutes from Callignee and was probably one of the highlights. Be sure to go via Traralgon Balook Rd, as the landscapes are simply incredible. Pine trees line the way and are complemented by rolling valleys and mountains as far as the eye can see. We stopped almost every 5 minutes to take some photos and soak in the fresh air and views....

Three Little Birds Cafe

Discovered by Ty
If you truly want to kick back and avoid having to make breakfast yourself, be sure to head out to Three Little Birds Café in Traralgon. Healthy breakfast options with amazing coffee all within a rustic and light filled restaurant that was absolutely pumping when we were there. Great atmosphere and great food. The café is only about 20 minutes from the accomodation, so you won’t have to wait too long before you break the fast!...

Cyathea Falls

Discovered by Ty
Again, another short 30 min drive from the accommodation and set within the Tarra Bulga National Park. Parking is within the Tarra Valley Picnic Area, just off Tarra Valley Rd. The hike to the falls is about 10 minutes and well worth it. The hike along the way is simply gorgeous too, so go check it out regardless!...

Strzelecki Ranges Of Gippsland

There are no tourists by the bus-load and many Melbourne tourism promoters are not even aware we exist, which ensures you get a unique personal experience. At the same time we are easy to find with 4 entry points located 10 minutes to ½ hour from the Gippsland towns of Churchill, Traralgon or Yarram. We have walks for everyone, regardless of your level of experience or fitness, so come and breathe the fresh air and lose yourself – or discover yourself – in this lost world which most trekkers still don’t know exists!...

Picnic Under The Mountain Ash

Have lunch at the Tarra Bulga Picnic area, just off the Grand Ridge Road, or the Tarra Valley picnic area off Tarra Valley Road. Both spots are set amongst the giant mountain ash and shady fronds of tree ferns and offer tables, fireplaces, toilets and picnic shelters....

Bushwalking And Waterfalls

Try out one of the numerous walking tracks that emanate from the picnic areas. Meander through the forest, head south down to Tarra Falls, or take the Fern Gully Nature Walk, which includes magnificent views along the famous suspension bridge....

Plants And Wildlife

The rainforest is a haven for plants and wildlife. Discover a wide variety of birds including the pilotbird, yellow tailed black cockatoo, eastern whipbird, and currawongs. Visit in the evening when the forest comes to life as possums, owls and bats emerge to feed. If you're lucky, you may see a lyrebird scratching the forest floor looking for food or catch a glimpse of some of the other inhabitants like wombats, swamp wallabies, gliders and platypuses....
