Relaxing Tiny Home Getaway
Adventure in Ashford, Greater Seattle, WA, US
Located near the beautiful Mount Rainier National Park, this tiny home was a great basecamp to explore the nearby foothills and national park. Whether you want a weekend of hiking in the snowy mountains or a relaxing few days with your favorite book and coffee, this tiny home has the comforts of home close to nature. Cozy blankets, a fully stocked kitchen, a hot tub out back, and a rocking chair on the front deck are some of the amenities to make your stay enjoyable when you get back from your adventures.
Just up the highway is Longmire, a 15-minute drive from the property. We walked across a huge wooden bridge over the Nisqually River and looked up at towering trees and historic cabins. If you visit In the summer and fall, or on sunny winter days, you can head up to Paradise within the park, another 20 minutes past Longmire. It's truly well named, with wandering trails, stunning views, and even a lodge and restaurant. The weekend of our stay, in April, the PNSW gave us a winter wonderland for a weekend, so the road past Longmire was closed. I would love to go back and explore during peak wildflower season in July and August.
There are some low elevation adventures you can do too. If it is a rainy day – this is the PNW, after all – a great adventure is hiking and photographing the waterfalls at Little Mashel River. The trailhead is about a 35-minute drive west of the property, or you can visit on your way back to Seattle like we did. Also on the way is the little historic town of Elbe, which has an Old West vibe and train cars repurposed as restaurants. We also enjoyed a short loop hike near Longmire.

This five-mile roundtrip hike takes you to a series of stunning waterfalls in the foothills west of Mount Rainier NP. The greenery covers every surface near the waterfall, making for a really magical sight. Once you get close to the falls, you can take the Middle Falls Trail or go to the top of the falls via the Upper Falls Trail. Note that the lower waterfall trail was closed at the time of writing due to a landslide, but the Middle Falls and Upper Falls trails are open. Check Washington Trails Association (WTA) website for current trip reports.
A short hike (0.4 miles) among towering evergreens, Twin Firs Loop is a nice short adventure in the forest, just east of the Longmire entrance to Mount Rainier NP. Remember to look up, as these trees are massive and really make you feel small. There is a small stream with a photogenic wooden bridge, as well as a wooden steps staircase. Note that this is within the national park, so dogs are not allowed.
Longmire is a historic district and has visitor services within Mount Rainier NP. There is a cool wooden bridge across the mighty Nisqually River, with a good view of the snowy Cascades. There is also the National Park Inn, Longmire Museum, Wilderness Information Center, and trailheads. Rampart Ridge, a popular trail in summer and fall, leaves from Longmire.
Elbe is a Western railroad town on the way to Mount Rainier NP and deserving of a short stop – there are even restaurants in old train cars! It's also worth visiting the a Western-style coffee shop (Elbe Junction), and the tiny, historic church across the street.
Popular with photographers, Alder Lake is known for a series of tree stumps along the water with tall hills above it. Depending on how the light hits, especially during the summer, you can get more turquoise colors. Moody weather was rolling in and out above the hills.
