Unique Chapel Stay in the Olive Groves
Adventure in Russell, Northland & Bay of Islands, NZ
A three and a half-hour drive from Auckland, and a short ten-minute scenic ferry trip later you’ll find yourself in Russell – a beautiful historic town in the heart of the Bay of Islands. Driving through the town feels like you’re in your own little bubble, it’s peaceful, calming, has stunning views, and the locals are as friendly as they come.
Before heading down the driveway, you’ll catch a glimpse of the chapel – your own little private getaway surrounded by greenery and olive groves. Park up out front, open the narrow entranceway doors, and you’ll be transported to a different time. The high ceilings, natural light, and spaciousness of the chapel make this an awesome and unique stay, with modern comforts such as a heat pump and internet access.
There’s plenty to do here as well. Russell’s town centre is only a five-minute drive away, and there are multiple ferries over to Paihia for even more activities. We loved walking around Russell, dining at the local restaurants and food spots, as well as walking up Flagstaff Hill for the panoramic views of the Bay of Islands. We also took the ferry back over to Paihia where we had a relaxing afternoon in the sun at a bar over the water.
All in all, you’ll love your time at the Chapel on Olive Grove!

In Russell, there’s a whole host of historical places to see. Spend your morning walking around the town center, following the routes mapped out.
After walking around and taking in the sights of Russell, a stop off at Hone’s Garden for lunch is a must do. With delicious wood fired pizzas, an array of craft beers and some seriously friendly staff you’re in for a great afternoon.
Make sure you head to Hell Hole to try out their bagels in the morning, great people behind the grill, and incredible tasting food – they also do great coffee!
You can either walk or drive up to the top of Flagstaff Hill and at the top of the hill, you’ll find yourself in front of a view that looks like it’s from a postcard.
Hop on the ferry over to Paihia and spend your afternoon soaking up the sun and relaxing with a drink at Zane Grey’s, a bar overhanging the water with some epic views.
