A Hygge Little Hideaway

Winding forest roads lined with towering mountain ash and brilliant tree ferns led us to our alpine retreat, a sweet 16k's down the mountain from Baw Baw. Despite the start of summer being only days away, it felt fitting that our time in the mountains was blessed with snow. The alpine chill of our 'Snowvember' weekend meant the cosy wood fire and steaming Japanese bath both got a workout! The huge angled picture window above the tub made for a tranquil experience as we gazed up into the treetops, and again at stars when night fell.

While there was plenty of opportunity for adventure, and we did walk the dogs along the nearby scenic tramline, we found ourselves leaning in to the opportunity to slowdown. This off-grid, full-of-character A-frame cabin provided the perfect space to do just that, so we switched off from the world and relished in the present.

Dozens of friendly king parrots joined us regularly on the expansive decking that looks out into the forest, and many hours were spent curled up on the comfy leather couches. We swapped stories while sipping tea or sometimes whisky, as we watched the weather imperceptibly transition from beaming sunrays to thunderstorms, and then back to blue skies again.

For nature lovers and adventure seekers alike this stay ticks all the boxes. A visit to Baw Baw National Park was definitely worth the drive and the spectacular Toorongo Falls prove again and again to be a must-see pause in the journey. Stopping at 'Nooj Pub' for lunch we can now say we understand what all the fuss is about; needless to say, we will be back!

'Hyg·ge' means 'the feeling of coziness and contentment evoked by simple comforts, as being wrapped in a warm blanket'. This Danish word for an outlook on life focused on simple pleasures and taking the time to cultivate them, meant 'Hygge', by definition, sums up our Tanjil Bren getaway perfectly!

Head up the winding alpine road for a dose of true mountain-top village life. In winter you can ski, snowboard or toboggan. In other months you can frisbee golf, mountain bike or go hiking. Grab lunch at the village restaurant and take in the views over a coffee or a beer!

Continue along Scotty's track from the sleepy village of Tanjil Bren, and you'll find an easy walkway that follows the old timber tramline from yesteryear. Wander through beautiful forest and take in the sounds and smells of nature surrounding you.
A real feature of the property, the Japanese bath with huge window above and timber surrounds is such a rejuvenating soak. Add your choice of bath salts to up the relax factor even more.

This iconic old pub is a real mecca for mountain folk and explorers of the area. We'd seen the bumper stickers and hoodies in the burbs but always wondered if this local hotel is worth all the talk. It is! A delicious menu, awesome vibe, great views and live music on a Sunday. We loved it.
