High Country, Huts & Horses

Golden pastures of dry summer grass swayed in the breeze as we gazed out across the Boorolite valley to the high country; our playground for the weekend. Those mountains sure were calling!

Amidst the crackle of the wood fire and that wholesome scent of horses and hay bales, relics of days-gone-by met with the newness of fresh cottage blooms. A worn leather saddle hung upon the rustic timber fence, yet inside the beautifully restored Pioneer's Hut, no comfort had been spared!

Previously owned by the producers of 'The Man from Snowy River', the 1850s hut flanks the main homestead of the picturesque Black Horse Park; a property steeped in rich history and blessed with age-old oaks, elms and poplars that have stood the test of time. We wandered the prestigious grounds, taking in the view from the jetty upon the dam. Horses came and went with their riders, cattle grazed nearby and two cute ponies brought the smiles to our little one.

This peaceful getaway made for the perfect base to explore the 'rooftop of Victoria' - summiting Mount Stirling in our 'Subie' and stopping in at the ever-so-beautiful Craig's Hut with sweeping alpine views as far as the eye can see. We picked wildflowers and snacked on a picnic overlooking the rocky outcrops, all the while keeping our eyes peeled for wild brumbies.

Retreating back to the hut after our day's adventure we snuggled up together beside the outdoor fire to sip hot chocolate and count shooting stars - and make a few excited plans to return for the snow season!

The lack of light polution from no nearby cities makes for some of the clearest, most beautiful skies in our state! Take in the magic of the Milky Way from a chair beside the fire and wonder about the size of that incredible universe out there!
