A Berry Nice Escape

As we drove down south towards Berry, the raging wind outside was so powerful it was pushing the car from side to side along the highway. We thought, the wind will either be better or worse up on the hill where Mt Hay Retreat stood. Well, it was worse. But the luxury, tranquillity and comfort of our villa at the beautiful Mt Hay made us forget about the wild weather as we took refuge inside.

After exploring the quaint town of Berry, wine in hand, we relaxed our achy muscles in the soothing, hot water of the Retreat’s spa which was constantly set to a steamy 36 degrees. Once our bodies were warmed it was time to fill our stomachs with the delectable food from ‘Hungry Duck’. The food there is seriously impressive!

We woke the next morning to an incredible view of the coastal mountainside, from the comfort and warmth of our bed, thanks to the ceiling high glass doors. Although the wind had not settled, in fact probably had gotten worse, we were eager to explore the surrounding landscapes and had heard there was a stunning view from the peak of Drawing Room Rocks. The scenery at the top definitely didn’t disappoint and made braving the elements well worth it, with more than 180 degrees view from cliff to coast.

We continued to explore the scenery and amenities around the grounds of Mt Hay Retreat. The stunning views from the hill side was particularly spectacular from the height of the large swing.
Once we were back to our serene dwellings, we prepared our cheese and fruit platter to be had once we finished our time in spacious hot tub from the privacy of our balcony. A balcony that overlooked the incredible views of the moon rising over the ocean. A spectacular scene to drink in while sipping wine as the stress of the real-world melts away. What a perfect getaway filled with nature, wildlife, wine, relaxation and of course who could forget Berry’s famous donuts.

Great encounters during the weekend consisted of a range of wildlife/farm animals like cows, Llamas, chickens and kangaroos.
A cosy restaurant that is packed with flavour and many amazing dishes on the menu to choose from. A must for all foodies!
A short 4km hike to the top of Drawing Room Rocks is well worth the journey to fit some exercise into the trip but to also get a good lay of the land and have a stunning view to appreciate.
Discovering the history of Berry through the relics on display in the museum right in the heart of town.
A beautiful beach to walk along during winter and a great location to visit and swim during summer when the water is warmer.
No trip to Berry would be complete without stopping by the Famous Donut Van for your piping hot fresh donuts.
Taking the time to taste test the local wines is a must when in the region. No point going to the local shops to grab a bottle. Best to visit the winery and taste them all first before you buy.
