Wild and Seek
Adventure in Upper Macdonald, Hunter Valley, NSW, AU
Our trip to Upper Macdonald started with a couple of hours on the road, watching the city give way to wide-open spaces and farm country. After a short cable ferry ride — a bit of an adventure on its own — we arrived at the cabin, which felt more like a wildlife sanctuary than anything else. Birds darted through the gardens, and wombats and kangaroos roamed around, making the place feel like a natural escape.
Nights were quiet under a blanket of stars, and mornings kicked off with coffee on the deck, where we had a perfect view of the red rock cliffs rising in the distance. We spent a good part of one morning in the sauna, a definite highlight, and lounged in the twin tubs outside, soaking up the morning light. The property’s outdoor kitchen was another standout -spacious and equipped with a fire pit and woodfired hot tub under the open sky.
Later, we explored the nearby town and ended up at an old pub with loads of character. On the way back to the cabin, we crossed paths with a few friendly horses, which somehow felt fitting for the laid-back, country vibe of the place. It was a weekend that felt like its own little world — peaceful, wild, and way too easy to get used to....
