Old World Charmer Meets Modern Luxe
Adventure in Wooragee, High Country, VIC, AU
We kicked off our getaway with what can only be described as the BIGGEST slice of lemon meringue cake known to humankind. Honestly, it was more like a whole cake disguised as a single serve. The perfect welcome to Yackandandah—a place brimming with small-town charm, handmade treasures, smiles from strangers, and more dogs to pat than you can count.
Before check-in, we spent a slow, delightful morning wandering through town, soaking in its magic. Hols treated herself to a fresh pair of kicks, and I made some instant connections with the local doggo community. The pace of life here felt slower, sweeter—as if we’d stepped into a storybook. Two sweethearts immersed in a wholesome little pocket of the world.
Our home base was Colby Cottage, just a 10-minute drive from town. The charm didn’t stop at the edge of Yackandandah—the cottage embraced us with the same warm, country vibe: a front porch with a rocking chair, a crackling wood fire, and even fresh farm eggs and brekkie supplies waiting for us. You could feel the love and care the hosts had poured into every detail. The care factor was off the charts—and we were here for all of it.
The cottage was a beautiful blend of old-school character and modern comfort. A split system kept things toasty, while a spa bath and large fridge added luxury to the cosy charm. The cast-iron gas stove was a standout—it looked like it had baked a thousand apple pies, each one better than the last.
One quirky highlight: the toilet! It had a vintage pull chain flush and a rabbit trap turned toilet paper holder. Strange? Sure. But also… brilliant. Like everything else in the cottage, it felt thoughtful, unique, and full of personality.
As night fell, we settled in with glasses of red wine by the fire. The flames crackled, our hearts exhaled, and peace settled in. We were content—deeply, simply, content.
The next morning began with coffee in bed for Hols and a farmhouse breakfast whipped up by yours truly—port included, thanks to our generous hosts. It reminded me of my Pa. Naturally curious, we sipped the port followed by black tea and, to our surprise, the combo was a delight. A new ritual, perhaps? Who says tea can’t be an adventure?
That afternoon, we headed to Woolshed Falls for a dose of fresh air and natural beauty. We hopped across rocks, played with slow-shutter shots, and filled our lungs (and hearts) with crisp, clean air. It was one of those landscapes that makes you feel small in the best way.
After nature’s recharge, we explored the historic town of Beechworth. We tasted local honey, scoured op shops and gem stores, and followed live music to a nearby brewery. The vibe was magnetic—and so were the two most unique pizzas we’ve ever tried. I’m not usually a pizza devotee, but this was a culinary experience not to be missed. We devoured every bite, fully satisfied—by the food, the day, and the cosy little cottage waiting for us.
That night, the unwind was next-level. A spa bath and a book, bubbles and bliss. It was the perfect end to a day bursting with joy. We both slept like Sleeping Beauty—seriously. It was so still, so quiet, so peaceful. Just like us.
The next morning, we wrapped our hands around warm coffees and wandered down the driveway to meet the horses. They were gentle, calm, and content—just like everything else in this beautiful part of the world. We offered a quiet thank you to Colby Cottage and our little slice of country luxe, then set off with full hearts, open minds, and a spark of excitement for whatever came next.

Things We Did
- Town
Super, SUPER adorable town especially during autumn time! We wondered the streets checking out the country charm and all that Beechworth offers. Honey samples, op shops, gem stone shops, brewery and I'm not much of a pizza girl but the pizzas at the brewery was an experience I wasn't missing out on!
I mean, you'd just come here just to say you've been to Yackan-dan-dah right? Has that real old school country town. Unique shops and cafes. Plus we had the BIGGEST EVER slice of lemon meringue cake. Yackandahdah doesn't do anything in halves thats for sure! Friendly as too.
