A Grape Adventure
Adventure in Whitfield, High Country, VIC, AU
We left Melbourne on a balmy spring Friday lunch, escaping the inevitable afternoon peak hour traffic.
Delighted to be free of the city, the M31 soon made its way through open paddocks, and farm fields of Melbourne's North. After a couple of hours on the road, the flatlands turned into the beginning of Victoria's high country. Once off the M31, the road towards Whitfield snakes its way through beautiful green farmlands and onto wine country sprawling with valleys. King Valley being the prominent destination for wine in the region.
After a 3hr trip, we arrived at our destination. Sitting on a grassy knoll, overlooking meadows with a fine view of the high country rests King River Cottage, the perfect spot to quietly sit and catch the last of the setting sun.
Our weekend was spent exploring the magnificent natural wonders nearby and indulging in the plentiful local food and wine on offer. The people of the humble little town made this trip truly unique, everyone was delightful and open, sharing a unique sense of community.
We were spoilt the entire time, our little cottage on the hill was such a treat to enjoy breakfast and afternoon wines as we disconnected from the hustle of the big smoke.

We walked the road to our cottage and stopped to feed the farm animals. You really feel like you're down on the farm when your hand is slurrped by the slimy, rough tongue of a cow!
Recommended to us by locals we stopped off for a tasting and stocked up on some of some great value grapes from a proud family vineyard.
A fairly new spot to the region hosting functions and offering wine tastings.
Red Feet has a lovely outdoor area with great views of the valley.

A casual dining place with an excellent well crafted modern food menu and wine list, showcasing the regions finest produce.
A serene escape under a cavernous red cliff face from which the falls runoff onto a small rock pool while local frogs and birds provide the commentary.
An ethical & sustainable eatery that produces its own wholemeal sourdough bread using freshly milled organic flour, located just over the bridge in Cheshunt. The menu is inspired by Austrian cuisine featuring classics like schnitzel, pork dumplings, and delicious pastries.
The owners Gabi & Thomas are a delight to converse with and very hospitable.

A gorgeous shop with condiments for any occasion. We grabbed the mushroom pate - highly recommend you try with butter on toast!
A winery and restaurant, offering wine tastings and Italian cuisine from local produce in a rustic setting just off the main road in Whitfield.
A short drive from Whitfield, the lookout provides an opportunity to witness the sprawl of King Valley with extended views of Mount Buffalo and Alpine National park mountain ranges, all with large rock and boulder formations peppered throughout.
A quiet recreational reserve to relax, have a picnic or fish off a boat or by the bank, nestled deep in the ranges.
