Ida's Hideaway
Adventure in Saint Andrews Beach, Mornington Peninsula, VIC, AU
We arrived just as the light was softening over the dunes, our baby finally asleep in the backseat, the ocean somewhere close enough to feel but not yet see. Ida’s Ocean Beach Studio felt like a quiet exhale the moment we stepped inside.
The space opens up in a way that makes you slow down. Huge windows pull the dunes right into the room, sunlight spilling across the floors, shifting with the day. It is the kind of place where you find yourself pausing mid sentence, just to take it in. My wife settled straight into that rhythm, moving gently through the space while I carried our bags in, both of us already feeling a world away from everything we had left behind.
The bed is the kind you sink into and do not want to leave. A proper king, soft in all the right ways. The kitchen is brand new and easy to use, which mattered more than I expected with a baby in tow. Mornings became slow and simple. Coffee, breakfast, the sound of the wind moving through the dunes just beyond the glass.
Evenings had their own ritual. We lit the fireplace once the temperature dropped, the whole studio warming into something deeply comforting. After we put the baby down, we would step outside onto the undercover deck. Steam rising from the heated spa, the quiet wrapping around us. Some nights we chose the outdoor bath instead, sinking into the warmth under the open sky, the kind of stillness you do not get in the city.
Everything about the place feels considered. There is a balance of clean modern touches and pieces with history, giving it character without losing comfort. It never feels overdone. Just right.
What surprised me most was how tucked away it feels, while still being so close to everything. We spent our days wandering to nearby spots like St Andrews Brewery, dipping into the Peninsula Hot Springs, and slowly making our way through local wineries. Golf courses sit nearby too, though this time the slower pace won.
You have the entire studio to yourself. The deck, the spa, the bath, the BBQ. It is all yours, private and uninterrupted. Arrival is easy with a key safe, though the stairs make you feel like you are stepping up into your own little world.
By the time we left, it did not feel like just a stay. It felt like a reset. A place where nature, comfort and a sense of calm all come together in a way that is hard to replicate. The kind of place you find yourself already planning to return to before you have even driven away.
