As you arrive at Blackwood Nest, you’ll notice this modern home sits surrounded by open farmland and countryside views. It doesn’t take long to realise this is somewhere that’s been thoughtfully designed, combining modern style with all the comforts to completely switch off.
Our first evening was spent settling in, playing board games, and exploring Kerikeri, just 15 minutes down the road. Over the next couple of days, we caught the ferry to Russell, sampled a few local eateries, and walked to Flagstaff Hills Historic Reserve. The coastal scenery, 360° views, and local history made it one of the highlights of the trip.
Back at the Nest, we slowed down with a platter and wine before curling up with a book by the fire and ended the day with a soak in the outdoor bath beneath a sky full of stars. Before heading home, we made the most of the generous breakfast supplies waiting in the kitchen.

Set right on Russell's waterfront, the Duke of Marlborough is New Zealand's oldest licensed hotel. It's attached restaurant is the perfect spot to enjoy a drink, and don't leave without trying the famous fried bread – it's some of the best!
The Flagstaff and Te Maiki Hills Loop is a short 3.5km walk that packs in some of the best of Russell. With panoramic views over the Bay of Islands, pockets of native bush, with Māori and colonial history, it's an easy walk that's well worth doing on a sunny day. It also starts from the ferry, so super easy to do if only visiting for a few hours.
The short ferry ride between Paihia and Russell is one of the easiest and most scenic ways to explore the Bay of Islands. In just 15 minutes, you'll be treated to stunning harbour views before arriving in the heart of New Zealand's first capital.
