Beachfront Escape Steps From the Sand
Adventure in Currarong, South Coast, NSW, AU
Arriving at this Shoalhaven beach house, I knew instantly it was going to be something special. Just 30 steps from the sand, with a front yard path leading straight to the beach, this beautifully styled two-bedroom home captured the perfect relaxed coastal feeling. The Pony Rider-inspired décor, warm timber cabinetry, spacious outdoor yard, deck and heated bathroom floors added thoughtful touches that made the stay feel extra luxurious.
The moment you open the doors, the entire beach unfolds in front of you, with views drawing the outside in. Floor-to-ceiling glass invites the ocean breeze and morning light through the home, making the beach feel like an extension of the living space.
The front deck quickly became our favourite place, sipping wine and sharing cheese platters while watching golden sunsets, then waking with a morning tea before wandering barefoot straight onto the beach to feel the ocean, swam with dolphins and large schools of mullets. From the shell-lined outdoor shower to the fully equipped kitchen, every detail created that true home-away-from-home feeling.
Days were spent exploring Shoalhaven’s incredible coastline, from Currarong’s shipwreck and rock pools at Abraham’s Bosom to sunrise walks, beach hopping, snorkelling, experiencing lighthouse sunsets and a bucket-list breakfast at The Gunyah surrounded by the peaceful forest of Paperbark Camp. A coastal escape we didn’t want to leave and will never forget.

The Shoalhaven’s southern beaches are filled with incredible places waiting to be explored, and Hyams Beach quickly became one of my favourites to date. The water was the bluest I have experienced in Australia, with crystal-clear shallows stretching along the soft white sand. We grabbed our snorkels and spent the morning exploring beneath the surface, watching fish glide through the calm waters and discovering the magic of Jervis Bay from a whole new perspective. A fresh ocean splash that was completely worth it.
A 10km drive through the wild beauty of the Beecroft Peninsula led us towards Point Perpendicular Lighthouse. Located within a Defence-managed area, entry is controlled with a guard at the gate and visitors are reminded to stay on marked paths and not go off course. We weren’t sure we were heading the right way, but arriving at this windswept lookout was unforgettable. With towering 90-metre sandstone cliffs, endless ocean views and golden light spilling across the horizon, it was the perfect place to watch the day disappear.
A scenic drive through the forest brought us to The Gunyah Restaurant at Paperbark Camp, where a delicious three-course breakfast and refreshing ginger juice made for the perfect start to our escape. After lingering over breakfast, we explored the peaceful grounds, spotted possums nestled among the trees and wandered beside the tranquil creek. It was the kind of place that invites you to slow down and savour every moment before the adventure continues.
The Currarong Rock Pools are a must-see, but it’s the incredible natural formations that truly stand out from an aerial view. Carved into the rugged coastline, the pools reveal striking shapes and vibrant turquoise water you don’t fully appreciate until you see the coastline from above. We followed the 2 km return coastal walking track, wandering along the beach, crossing the little wooden bridge and stopping to take it all in. It’s an easy adventure that rewards you with breathtaking views and reminds you that some of the best coastal experiences are found by simply slowing down and exploring.
Right out front of the house beachouse is the most picturesque bay.
