Fireside calm and coastal wanders

From the moment I walked through the gate at Poet’s Corner Cottage, I felt myself begin to slow down. A beautiful zen garden and fishpond welcomed me before I even reached the cottage, creating an immediate sense of calm. Inside, the modern, beautifully presented space was warm, cosy and incredibly comfortable, the perfect place for a solo escape.

My mornings were deliberately slow. Fresh bread provided by my thoughtful host made breakfast feel like a treat, and there was no need to rush anywhere. I spent time reading, relaxing and simply enjoying the quiet of the cottage.

In the afternoons, I headed out to explore Phillip Island. I walked to Forrest Caves, spotting a wallaby along the way, and visited Pyramid Rock to take in the dramatic coastline. One of those wonderful, completely unexpected travel moments came when I spotted a whale swimming up and down the coast nearby. It was an unexpected absolute treat.

Back at the cottage, evenings were about cooking dinner, opening a bottle of wine and settling beside the roaring wood fire with my book.

On my way home, I stopped at San Remo to watch the pelican feeding before finishing my escape with fish and chips for lunch.

There’s something about being beside the ocean and spending time in nature that always resets me. I left Poet’s Corner feeling calmer, grounded and genuinely rejuvenated - exactly what I’d hoped for from a few days away.

Once you climb over the sand dunes (via a timber walkway), Forest Caves are only a 10 minute walk down the beach but only visit during low tide and always watch the water. At low tide you can climb on top and view the caves from above.

This lookout has two stops and both are just a short walk from the carpark. Spectacular coastline and a brilliant view of Pyramid Rock. If you're lucky, you might see whales passing by.

A great stop on the way to/from Phillip Island is the Pelican feeding show at midday at San Remo. Once they've been fed, you can grab a bite at the local fish & chips shop next door.
