Where The Wild Hearts Wander
Adventure in Ngunguru, Northland & Bay of Islands, NZ
There’s something about travelling with an adventurous friend that makes getting from A to B fantastically impossible. My friend Hollie and I were on our way to our Cabin with postcard kinda views when a little detour led us to a beautiful secluded waterfall, where we suddenly decided stripping down and becoming one with Mother Nature was a very good idea. And by heck, she was fresh in!! A complete heart starter bit like my friend.
We arrived at Cabin Fever just as the sun was beginning to disappear, painting the sky in soft pinks, peachy oranges and golden light. And then we saw the spa bath. Wild and free, we were in! A lot warmer than the waterfall. Poured ourselves some of New Zealand’s finest juice and slipped into the warm water, watching the last of the sunset fade behind the mountains as we disappeared into our night.
The cabin is made up of two separate quarters connected by a beautiful wooden deck, with views stretching towards the ocean and mountains to the other side. One dwelling of the cabin had a gorgeous queen bedroom, upstairs loft and little hangout nook, which became my temporary office when the real world came knocking. Then across the deck was an open plan kitchen and lounge with another loft and separate bathroom. And I have to mention the shower too friends. Once we figured out the sweet spot for the hot water, that shower pressure was ON POINT.
Our mornings were slow and sunny and the sunroom on the porch was one of our favourite spots over looking the ocean. Brunch set up camp on the deck, yoga arrived in the spring air with plenty of chats and messy hair. There was absolutely nowhere we needed to be. The glorious sunset arrived each evening. We spa bathed. And we repeat. There was something about the air here that I wanted to bottle up and take home. Sweet, crisp, green and unmistakably spring. The kind of air that makes you want to breathe a little deeper and welcomes uncontrollable smiles to your face.
On checkout day, we squeezed in one last adventure, heading towards the lighthouse walk and the universe was on our side that day as well as the tide times lining up for us to cross the islands to get to the lighthouse.
Holy moly New Zealand, the views are nek level!! It was wild and outrageously wonderful, although we did have to repeatedly remind ourselves, “There’s no snakes in NZ.” Our beautiful minds hadn't entirely landed in NZ from Australia as yet! Ha! Hollie, being the orchid freak she is, was also on high alert for every hidden gem along the way. Every walk became an unofficial orchid and fungi safari. Which I love discovering new things especially from friends.
We wandered onwards to Whale Bay, a definite must on our adventure list. And it was pure bliss. Wild beauty and again complete postcard material!
Here we are, me and my friend, livin' wild and free in New Zealand, with the coastline stretching out before us and the weather turning on just for the occasion. Every step and every stair was worth the view especially with you my friend.

We took the ever so beautiful walk to whale bay and had the entire beach to ourselves! Incredible views. Awesome walk. A lot of stairs and toilet block at Whale Bay. Totally worth the journey!
You need to line up the tide times to get across to the other side of the Lighthouse unless you are feeling super lucky like us! Awesome views along the way as well as the arrival at the lighthouse!
Easy pull off the side of the road lookout over the ocean and mountains!
We enjoyed a relaxing spa bath at sunset every night!
Enjoyed being one with Mother Nature at Piroa Falls. Beautiful walk into the falls, one of the best spots we come across while travelling North island of NZ. And yep!!! It was super fresh alright! hahaha
