Hidden Mountain Hideaway

Driving down the dirt road leading to Hidden Valley Retreat Cottages, we had no idea what to expect. It was getting dark and Fiona, the host, had told us to be careful on the drive as wildlife could often be spotted, including koalas, which made me all the more excited. When we finally arrived, we couldn’t believe we were only a few hours from the city. Cabbage Tree Cottage is a cute little wooden cabin, in the middle of a clearing with classic Australian bush on one side and lush rainforest on the other. We opened the door to find a charmingly rustic and cosy interior entirely made out of wood, with everything we could have wished for, including a fireplace and a spa bath, as well as dinner ready in the fridge, which Fiona had recommended we organise with a neighbouring caterer! We were sold.

We spent the next day going to lookouts and eating our way along the Bells Line of Road, and decided to walk it off by going up to Mount Banks, which we would 100% recommend! Stunning views guaranteed.

Back at the cottage, we spent our time relaxing on the lawn, having coffee on the porch, peacefully reading and listening to the birds and cicadas and chilling by the outdoor fire with a glass of wine.

Cabbage tree cottage was the perfect quiet getaway for us, secluded enough to make us feel like we were in a different world and close to everything at the same time. We came home feeling so relaxed and recharged and can’t wait to go back and discover more of this amazing area!

If you drive for about 50 minutes along the Bells Line of Road, you will find Mount Banks, a not so popular walk compared to others in the Blue Mountains but which is well worth the detour in our opinion! The walk starts at the Mount Banks Picnic area. There are two options, a track via the road, or one via the ridge. We decided to go via the ridge for more epic views and were not disappointed! The track is steep at times but never too challenging and goes from stunning cliffs to a tall forest of monkey gums at the top. We loved the variety of landscapes and the flora and fauna we were able to observe along the way!

After walking and driving all day, we were ready for a bit of a relax and the Hillbilly cider shed delivered. With amazing ciders and delicious wood fire pizza in a lovely outdoor setting, it ticked all the boxes for us!
We definitely recommend the tasting paddle and the garlic pizza!

If you go for a drive along the Bells Line of Road, we recommend taking a detour to Mount Wilson! With stunning lookouts and rainforests, it is perfect for an afternoon wander. We particularly loved wandering through the Cathedral of Ferns, a short and tranquil walk amongst majestic stands of tree ferns and scrambling vines.

A few minutes from the cottage, you will find a stunning lookout with glorious views over the Grose River. While we were there on a cloudy day, we can imagine how magical this place would be at sunset! Perfect for a romantic picnic! There is also a walk that goes down to the river, which sounds like a fun activity to do on a hot day!
