Situated on the highest hill in town, be&be boasts magnificent three-hundred-and-sixty-degree-views over town and country. The Elizabethan style house and studio are heritage listed and sit in an acre of garden, providing the perfect setting for a remarkable country experience, only a short walk to town. Treat yourself and book a stay, the encounter will linger long after you return home.

The space
The self-contained, studio-style building at be&be is part of a heritage-listed property. Inside furnishings combine mid-century elegance with seventies funk, to bring freshness and character to the historically laden, hundred-and-fifty-year-old dwelling. Outside european trees, bonsaied by the harsh conditions on the hill, sit amongst a crop of hundred year old gums. Rock beds and structural succulents combine with these elements to make the garden a unique and wonderful place to visit.

A spontaneous trip to the Goldfields was made all the more delightful by a perfect stay at be&be. It was warm, cosy and restful. I loved waking to the sound of Black Cockatoos and kookaburras and views all around…

We had such a great stay at be&be studio-one. The accommodation is stunning, with thoughtful attention to detail – from the gorgeous interior and mid-century furniture to the lovely breakfast items Ni...cola left for us.

It's set in a peaceful and picturesque location, with a lovely garden and sweeping views across Castlemaine. The studio is spacious and equipped with everything you could need for a relaxing stay, including excellent heating, comfortable bedding, and a coffee machine.

I especially loved that there were so many quiet little nooks to sit with a book and a cup of coffee and simply unwind.

It made for the most wonderful creative retreat with our two pups. If you're looking for a great place to stay in Castlemaine, this is it!

Such a beautiful place to stay! The house is very peaceful, with a lovely garden, and only about 20 minute walk to get into the hub of the town where there are lots of nice cafes, shops etc. And lots of nice walks nearby. Nicola was extremely helpful, highly recommend a getaway here!

In 2007, when Nicola moved to ‘Castlehouse’ with her family, studio-one was a garage and studio-two a baron hill. Over the following fifteen years she spent oceans of time restoring the dilapidated house, creating the garden from scratch and building studio-two while completing a PhD in fine-art and raising three boys: all labours of love. The main drive behind her design direction for be&be was to create warm, eclectic spaces, that nurture and restore, while providing a serene home-away-from-home, for people wanting to spend time in this particular neck of the woods. Studio-three is currently under construction.

Central Springs Track

Formerly a gold rush town called "The Junction” this spot is now a destination for swimming, bushwalking and picnics. If you’re keen on a walk, there are many that branch from this location. We chose the short walk leading to the top of nearby cliffs, giving a fantastic view of the river below. Don’t forget to try the mineral water flowing from the spring.
