Grass Trees Cottage

Pet-friendly
Secluded, private and serene, the Grass Tree Cottage is an absolute retreat for those looking for a weekend getaway or a unique stop along the Great Ocean Road. The two-bedroom cabin is ideal accommodation for couples, small families or a duo of friends.

On 3 acres of lush Otway Forest, the cottage is nestled in the hillside, surrounded by twisty-bark eucalyptus and regional grass trees. For those in the right season, the flowering grass trees are an absolute eye-grab. On the property, you are likely see wallabies eating the morning sprouts, koalas barking in the treetops, and plentiful bird and flower varieties.

There are two bedrooms. The primary room has a king bed, and the second room has a queen/double bunk.

The cottage is completely private with a fully stocked kitchen, gas oven, bath, fireplace, plus some urban comforts – coffee pod machine, Wi-Fi, smart TV and air-conditioning. There is enough to accommodate a long weekend.

Positioned directly in the centre along the Great Ocean Road, this region is isolated and quiet, making for a great stop away from the bustling attractions and beach towns. The cottage is 5 minutes away from the Aire River Inlet & Beach, 15 minutes from the Cape Otway National Park and Light Station, and 30 minutes from Apollo Bay, Johanna Beach or Lavers Hill.

The cabin is comfortable enough to stay inside nestled by the fire, and is well positioned to be a base camp for the wandering adventurers.
Linens are provided. You will need to bring your own food, drinking water and firewood – and all rubbish needs to be taken out.

The closest shops are located about a 30-minute drive away. Come prepared with food and fresh drinking water.

Such a beautiful, serene place for a weekend escape. In late July/early August the combination of wood fire and split system was very cosy and the rustic set up of the cottage comfy and inviting. The ...wide verandahs were perfect for sitting in the morning sun with a cup of coffee, looking out at the view through the lovely trees and feeding the parrots and rosellas (bring native bird seed).
So much to do we will have to come back! We explored nearby Aire River inlet (will come back with kayaks), did a walk at Triplet Falls (plenty of steps! but worth it), visited the Otway Lighthouse (read the Wrecks and Reputations in the cottage for an added insight into the drama of the Shipwreck Coast) and wandered into Parker Hill and Blanket Bay to check out the campsites and stretches of Great Ocean Walk. Terrific stay.

A very cosy cottage, surrounded by bush with a wonderful feeling of seclusion and getaway. The fire was very cosy, the bath in the lounge was great, the visiting birds a delight, and the bed was very comfy with cosy winter flannelette sheets. A great spot for a getaway.

Such an amazing stay. Very quiet and secluded which made it a great spot to go and disconnect. The wildlife that joined us during the mornings and at night was an added bonus.

Explore Aire River

The Aire River winds its way through wetlands and floodplains. It's an awesome little spot to launch a kayak or canoe, then spot endangered hooded plovers and graceful swans as they take flight.

Great Ocean Beach Walk

This scenic hike will take you along the cost of the great ocean road path. You will see stunning views of Aire Inlet, cliff faces, gnarled trees and secluded beaches.

Great Ocean Walk

There is nothing like the Great Ocean Walk located on the Great Ocean Road region between Apollo Bay and the iconic Twelve Apostles, the trail follows the coastline for more than 100km. Admire this spectacular coast and the changes in landscape each day.

Aire River Beach Drive

If you've brought your 4x4 you can explore the nearby Aire River tracks, which lead to some beautiful beaches. It gets boggy at the end, so take note: you may need to let the tyre pressure down, and a shovel may come in handy!

Beach Walk

By car turn right out of the gate and take a short drive up the Great Ocean Road. There is a lookout on your left which is positioned perfectly for sunset. If you’re up for an adventure you could also take the kayaks down to where the Aire River flows into the ocean.

We stopped near the Cape Otway Lighthouse to check out the weird contrasting landscape around us. Unfortunately these dead trees are due to rising Koala populations.
