The Retreat
Two off-grid homes, the Cottage and the Cabin, side by side and all yours. It’s designed for families and friends who want space to spread out and plenty of reasons to come together outdoors, with all the comforts of a luxury stay.

Sleeping
The Cottage (sleeps 4)

Bedroom 1: king bed
Bedroom 2: two single beds
1 bathroom

The Cabin (sleeps 4)

Loft bedroom: queen bed
Living area: Koala sofa bed
1 bathroom
The Cabin suits a small family best, rather than four adults.

The Pavilion
Our outdoor kitchen is built for long lunches and shared feasts. Cook on the integrated gas BBQ or fire up our “Deuce” from Pig n Pilgrim to cook over wood embers, with produce from the kitchen garden.

Outdoors
Soak in the wood-fired bath on the deck, gather around the fire pit, and head up to the mezzanine to stargaze with zero light pollution. Comfy seating is scattered around the property, along with an outdoor library for slow afternoons.

Coffee
Will & Co coffee and a Breville Barista machine are supplied for long mornings.

Your own space
The Cottage, the Cabin and the land around them are exclusively yours. The Tiny House sits in its own separate paddock and may have other guests. The only shared space on the property is the sauna paddock, and that’s always booked privately.

Need more room?
The Tiny House, a private off-grid tiny house for two in its own paddock nearby, can be booked alongside the Retreat for groups of up to 10. Message us to check availability.

Next to the sauna paddock is our open-air wellness space. Train in nature, then recover in the heat.

Off-grid living
The Retreat runs entirely on a state-of-the-art solar system. You’ll barely notice you’re off-grid, but we ask guests to be mindful of power use so everyone gets the most out of their stay.

Getting out and about
The historic village of St Albans is 20 minutes away, home to the Settlers Arms, one of Australia’s oldest pubs, with live music in the oak tree garden on weekends. Hikes like Jacks Track take you up to the ridgeline for views across the valley, and walking trails start right from your door.

Before you arrive
Seven days before your stay, we’ll send you “Your Guide to the Wilderness”, with everything you need to know about getting here, what to expect and what to bring. Any questions? Just message us here on Airbnb.

Sunday Farmers Market

We were lucky to find the Farmers Market (every 2nd Sunday of the month) and see the freshest farm products in the town. There is also a Vintage & Antiques Market on the 3rd Sunday of the month.

Exploring St Albans Historic Village

This tiny historical village is worth a visit. The locals call it "Slice of Paradise". No wonder for a hundred years travellers would rest on the main road from Sydney to the Hunter Valley. We visited the St Albans Inn for an afternoon drink where locals gathered as a hub of the village. The drive here was very scenic with a strong countryside and farming atmosphere, make sure to check out Mogo Creek which is a further 10-minute drive from the Inn and get ready to be astonished by the scenic view of the lake.

Lunch At Settlers Arm Inn

We were quite hungry and we discovered this unique inn that was established in 1836. Best feed in town for sure!
Hike at Shepherds Gully

Hike At Shepherds Gully

The long, gentle climb along Shepherd’s Gully has some beautiful scenery and some historic remnants of the Old Great North Road. The optional side trip to Hangmans Rock takes you past an old convict stockade site and some of the construction remnants on the main Devines Hill ascent.

Historical Hike At Convict Trail

This convict trail hike is truly unique, It takes us along the Old Great North Road, an amazing feat of engineering that was built by convicts in the 1830’s to link Sydney with the Hunter Region. The information panel along the walk really does bring history to the history to life. It's like we walked into an open-air museum with some engaging convict stories.

Only 30 min drive from Berry Hill to Wiseman ferry, this walk is very accessible. To get the most out of this trail (and understand more of the history), we recommend making a big loop that includes Finchs Line - the original road which was in use before the Great North Road. This circuit gives you a better grasp of the Great North Road’s history and is more scenic.
