Perched on the cliff of Great Mackerel Beach with expansive views sweeping East to North to encompass Palm Beach, Lion Island and all the way to the Central Coast, Cape Mackerel Cabin is nestled in a tranquil bushland setting where Ku-ring-Gai National Park meets Pittwater. Offering privacy and seclusion, the sun-drenched house captures all day sun and a relaxed and highly prized Pittwater lifestyle. Set amongst the treetops this is a treehouse that both adults and kids can relish....

We are a family with a toddler (2 years of age) and are reasonably athletic and fit and have no troubles getting to our beloved weekend cabin. We have had visitors ranging from young families with babies ranging from 2 months to 3 years, to baby boomers (of average fitness) in their late 60s who have found the ascent and beach crossing fine.

If you are unfit, have health concerns, or suffer from injuries, this is probably not the property for you as it does involve a beautiful 300 metre beach crossing, followed by a mesmerising view as you ascend 128 small stairs (good for your health tracker) when you find yourself at our front door.

The right preparations will make the 10 minute journey from the jetty comfortable. We have a couple of good backpacks (Patagonia and Filson) which keeps our hands free for our toddler and enables maximum volume and weight to be carried to the house. You can also borrow (and return) a wheelbarrow on the shore to help with the 300m beach crossing.

A couple of things to note about the house: as we are secluded in the beautiful National Park of Ku-ring-Gai we operate on tank water and as such as very mindful of water use. We have several filters to ensure the water is as pure as possible (and given the Eucalyptus leaves on roofs and water collection points a tannin stain is sometimes visible in the water). As such we make bottled water available for you.

We are also on a septic system, so again encourage you to be environmentally conscious and limit your showers to a maximum of 5 minutes each (you also have the choice of a beautiful refreshing swim in Pittwater).

Mackerel Beach Lookout

Discovered by Remy
Only a stone throw from the property and visible from the balcony is one of the most impressive looks outs on the Mackerel trail walking track. We climbed the short incline and enjoyed the view across the bay without having to complete the Basin track....

Warm Evening Swim

Discovered by Remy
After dinner, we enjoyed the warm evening by heading down to the beach and swimming in the ocean. An intimate beach, we were the only ones there and had the whole beach to ourselves....

Fishing At Cape Mackerel Wharf

Discovered by Remy
Just a short stroll across the beach from the cabin, we ventured to the Cape Mackerel wharf to go fishing. Catching leather jacket, brim and flat head every 10 minutes. It was an eventful morning spent fishing. We later enjoyed two of the fish freshly grilled with a glass of wine....

Coastal Drive

Discovered by Remy
Just across the water from Cape Mackeral are the beautiful northern beaches and the coastal road that winds alongside it. Get the drive-in early, and you will be able to watch a beautiful sunrise over the ocean with very few cars on the road. Some of my favourite viewpoints along this road are South Avalon carpark, North Bilgola Lookout and Long Reef.

Spend the day making your way from Palm Beach down the coast and get some pumping waves, and there's a massive selection to choose from.

Bush Walking In Ku Ring Gai National Park

Simply step out from our front steps and you will find yourself in Ku-Ring-Gai National Park on the trail between West Head Lookout and Currawong Beach / the Basin....

Fishing At Mackerel Beach

If you are keen fisherman/woman, simply descend the stairs to Mackerel Beach and you can fish off the ferry jetty or below Cape Mackerel off the rocks....

Champagne Rock Lookout

270 degree views over Pittwater, Palm Beach, Clareville, and the Basic from atop champagne rock / a great spot for an evening drink....

Swimming And Snorkelling At Mackerel Beach

Whether you enjoy ocean swims and total immersion style swimming, a snorkel, or a quick (or longer) dip, Mackerel Beach is perfect for families who enjoy a quiet and relaxing swim (there is no surf, which frankly, we are quietly happy about)......

Treehouse Getaway
