House of Mud and Straw sits solidly and silently in open paddocks shared with cows and the sweeping weather. Just one hour out from Melbourne, the house provides the opportunity to kick back, cook, play tunes, do puzzles, drink wine, snooze and be merry in a comfy, stylistic, fable-like, storybook farmhouse.
Featuring feather and linen beds, a pianola parlour, loft chill out space, indoor greenery, cosy nooks and curated creature comforts, every treasure and trinket in the house has been gathered with love from the back-of-the-shed, family members and vintage stores.

House of Mud and Straw was built with a loving nod to the pioneer of the modern mudbrick building – Alistair Knox – designer, builder and advocate for an alternate lifestyle. The house runs with an eco-friendly system that converts sewage, wastewater and organic waste via an underground worm farm. This creates liquid fertiliser for use around the property. As the house respects the traditional earthy values of mudbrick construction, it stores and releases heat through its mud bricks and packed straw insulation. This process is fuelled by a Rayburn wood heater in the kitchen, heating water piped through to heating panels in the rooms.

Breakfast At Trentham General

Part cafe and part vintage homewares store, Trentham General was a great places to fill our bellies with a big breakfast and coffee before a day of exploring. You can appreciate that the kitchen works closely with local producers to keep the menu up-to-date, my meal of choice being the Goat’s Cheese & Roast Tomato Bruschetta - yummy!

Take Away At Cosmopolitan Hotel

We wanted to support the locals and try a locally made wine so we headed to the Cosmopolitan Hotel to browse their options, returning home with a beautiful red wine to pair with our home-cooked dinner.

Trentham Falls

A large and magnificent waterfall located only a few minutes drive away from town. Trentham Falls is a must see after heavy rainfall, the excess of water making it flow as furious as ever and the luscious greenery surrounding it.

Trentham Falls

Discover the beautiful and lush Trentham Falls, Victoria's highest single-drop waterfall. The falls were formed some five million years ago by molten lava rapidly cooling as it flowed along the old Coliban River valley. Trentham waterfall cascades 32 metres onto the quartz gravel below. Located in the Wombat State Forest, this natural wonder is particularly enchanting in winter when every moss covered rock and fern glistens with water.

Quarry Street Recreation Reserve

While driving through the town we spotted this reserve and packed a ourselves a picnic to enjoy on the grass. Unfortunately on our return it started raining so we went for a little wander around instead and took in the gorgeous scenery of Autumn’s colours slowly making themselves visible in the trees.

The Domino Trail

Beautiful bush terrain walk or cycle along the old train line from Trentham East to Radio Springs Hotel - Lyonville.
