Kawakawa Hut is a small but special little place tucked neatly between rolling hills. The Hut provides a simple but comfy getaway for two in a beautiful countryside. Whether you are in need of an affordable place as a stopover whilst driving the North Island, on a road trip or in need of a longer stay to explore Taupo or in Taupo for a particular event, Kawakawa Hut will cater to all your needs.

Close by lies the vegetable garden, and friendly cows graze just over the fence. Further out over surrounding farmland and you can see Tongariros snow capped mountains in the distance, so sit back and enjoy. The hut is off grid and is built of repurposed materials so that your stay has a low environmental impact. You will find everything you need in one room, with the addition of a small ensuite. The Hut has been positioned to the North with windows on all sides to maximise the winter sunlight and provide views of the surrounding farmland.

Kawakawa Hut is situated on our farm where we are eagerly learning how to raise our own stock and grow Veges. The hut is situated adjacent the vegetable garden and the barn which is really the hub for our homesteading activities. Although we try to work around the presence of our guests, we do need to harvest from the garden and feed the animals and so absolute privacy during daylight hours is not guaranteed. On the other hand we love bumping into our guests and striking up a yarn, often sharing insights about gardening and our journey down this lifestyle path.

The “crystal” bath is our latest edition to the Hut.
Lovingly hand crafted by Brent from concrete and locally sourced obsidian crystals, this space is for you to relax, soak, be still, watch and let go of whatever may be clouding your awareness.

Our intention with the crystal bath is to provide the ultimate energetic grounding experience. Immersion in harvested rainwater, a bath made from rock, cut into the earth, head resting on an obsidian pillow with a crystal grid in all corners. When combined with the natural surroundings, views of Tongariro and the vastness of the night sky we hope there is some power here if you have the intention for it.

It’s a huge bath for one, or a snuggly top & tail fit for two.

Privately located to the east of the Hut, and screened by the woodshed and vegetation. Only the cows and sheep can see you!

We also have two very friendly barn cats, who just LOVE to hang out with hut guests, please let us know if you are bringing a dog or if you have a cat allergy and we will keep them in the barn!

Additional Information

Rest on the queen size bed, relax on the sofa by the fire, or chill outside under the ‘lean-to’ porch with a drink. The hut provides a safe haven for all seasons. We also can provide a portacot for your baby or stretcher for a child.

The basic kitchen & bar make for a great area for enjoying food and drinks while looking out at Mt Ruapehu. A BBQ is just outside. The kitchen has a camp-style gas cooker, a motorhome style fridge/freezer, coffee plunger, plates, cups and cutlery etc.

The hut is off-grid and runs off batteries so USB charging is provided and mains powerpoints can be used through an inverter but care needs to be taken to not drain the batteries. No Wifi either but there is good cellphone coverage. We recommend you get back to basics and unwind here.

Keep warm and cozy in winter next to the log burner, which can be dampened right down to keep you warm through the night. Ample kindling and firewood are located in the lean-too, just watch out for the spiders and other bugs that share their countryside with you.

Plenty of space for parking if you have a boat trailer or large vehicle.

The hut is just off the driveway and opposite the barn some 30m away with a vegetable garden in between. We live further up the driveway, 300m away and we may use the barn and the garden while guests are staying but our visits will be brief and we will never intrude. We welcome guests to explore the vegetable garden and say hello to the cows or horses over the fence and come and go as they please via the driveway.

Absolutely no parties/events, weddings or professional photography

We feel will live in a very special place, with a wonderful rural community and so much on offer with the lake, bush and mountains etc. Access to the Lake is nearby at Kinloch, 10 minutes drive. Put your boat in at the ramp there and enjoy fishing, watersports or exploring some of the Western bays. Grab some takeaways at the Kinloch Store, they also stock all your convenience needs. Or visit our favourite The Tipsy Trout for fantastic coffee and a wonderful breakfast, lunch or dinner. Kinloch beach is great for casual lakeside fun.

A little way down and across the road from the Hut is the new Otakatake mountain bike track part of the “Great Lake Trails” which takes you downhill through the neighbouring bush, all the way to Kinloch Bay (10km). Alternatively head west down the main road approximately 1km to the start of the Kawakawa Track, taking you down to Kawakawa Bay, a stunning spot, unreachable by road and a destination for the rock climbing crowd. Or if you are feeling fit why not complete the loop which is approx 38km of riding with stunning views!

If you feel like exploring, the Taupo region has so much to offer you will definitely need a car to explore what’s on offer! Restaurants, cafes, golf courses and galleries are plentiful. We highly recommend The Store House for excellent coffee & breakfast, The Bantry and The Vine for fine dining. Geothermal wonders like the Wairakei Terraces hot pools and the Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal Park. Or hit the winter slopes at Whakapapa Ski Resort, an hour & 45 minutes away.

Kinloch Lakeside Village 10mins away - restaurant, cafe, convenience store, beach, boat ramp
Taupo town 25mins away.

One baby or child under 5 can potentially be accommodated upon request. Also if you have a dog that you are wanting to bring we may be able to accommodate them please ask :)

Dogs are welcome to stay at our hut, providing they are kept under control outside (we have our own dog, horses, chickens, and cows) and stay off our bed and couch inside the hut ;)

Chanel and Brent Griffiths, along with their daughter Frankie and dog Betty are your hosts at Kawakawa Hut. Our Taupo story really starts at our Hut. We brought the land in early 2017 (23 bare acres) and spent the year road tripping down from Auckland on the weekends to stay on the land, initially camping in our trusty “Blueberry” a 11 foot 1967 Crusader caravan. She was a fair weather gal and so come winter we started to make her a “shelter” and a place to put our tools and belongings. After a year of dreaming of living in Taupo we decided to make the big move in December 2017 and subsequently found out we were expecting our first child too! Not quite part of the “plan” but we embraced it and life has flowed beautifully for us since. Brent took a year and a half off from paid work, made our Hut livable, built a big barn, did the earthworks for our driveway and trained our Hungarian Vizsla puppy “Betty” for 8 months to be a deer indicating dog (she is now a wonderful deer hunting dog and pet!). Chanel meanwhile worked (from the hut) in her graphic design business, designed by CCC, plus grew a baby. Frankie then entered the world, caused a little drama and then Brent began the massive task of building our small passive home. Chanel and Frankie did frequent “building inspections” and Grant (Chanel’s dad) joined the work force as a very capable apprentice. We finally moved into the house in June 2019. Brent then went back to the “real world” and got himself an engineering job in town. At the beginning of 2020, we did up the Hut further so she was ready to share with our guests, family and friends. Guests have been enjoying staying in the hut for 3 years now and we are amazed at how popular it has become. It is an alternative income stream that aligns perfectly with our ethos of being on the land and sharing it with others. Brent left his engineering job at the start of 2022, a move that has been on the cards for a while. We had more projects in mind by then and with world events looking rather dire it felt like the right time to focus on building a more resilient and self-sufficient lifestyle. We have since subdivided our land into 2 blocks, a bare 10 acre block we have for sale & our 13 acres. We have withdrawn the section from the depressed market but do let us know if you fancy becoming neighbours! Brent now spends loads more time with Frankie, he helps friends and neighbours with handyman projects and puts lots of energy into our property, especially the vegetable garden as it is our intention of being completely self-sufficient one day soon. Looking towards 2024 as funds and time allow, we plan to begin expanding the vegetable garden to become a market garden and eventually a fully fledged permaculture farm. Our wish is to help heal the local community through access to spray free produce, to provide a place where people can visit, get grounded, find the lost respect for our soil and re-learn the skills of how to grow things and thrive with nature as our teacher. We envision “Small Change Farm” evolving slowly and organically as our skill set broadens and we figure out what grows here and what the locals want and need. Lets see what unfolds in this space… Our journey has been one of constant learning and enthusiasm but with minimal stress or force. We have ascension meditation to thank for this! Ascension is a powerful tool to get out of the thinking mind and enjoy the magic of the present moment for the perfection that it always is. It has allowed us to enjoy the process of developing our land while we move forward organically and the path just presents itself as we walk it. For more information on ascension meditation either talk to us or please visit http://www.thebrightpath.com We have a lot of love for the hut and what it has done for us. It provides a cosy shelter throughout the year, hot summers, cold winters and everything else in between. We are so happy to see it being used and loved by our guests, making memories and enjoying our little slice of paradise. We hope you enjoy getting back to basics, it’s good for the soul, you can trust us on that.
