A Countryside Winter Warmer
Adventure in Marotiri, Taupō, NZ
After a scenic drive through farmland, the first thing we noticed at The Farmers Rest was the view. Surrounded by rolling hills, the off-grid cabin felt cosy, with its open-plan design and thoughtful details reflecting the property's farming roots. We were lucky with the weather too, waking to crisp, frosty mornings before ending each day with burnt orange sunsets.
Although the cabin feels secluded, it's only around a 30 minute drive from Taupō, so we spent our days exploring some of the region's highlights. We wandered the Aratiatia Rapids Lookout Walk, took a cruise out to the Māori Rock Carvings, and grabbed a coffee before stretching our legs on the walk to Hot Water Beach.
Returning to the cabin each afternoon was one of the best parts of the stay. The fire warmed the space quickly, and evenings were spent reading, soaking in the outdoor bath, and enjoying the quiet that comes with being completely off-grid.
Our stay struck the perfect balance between exploring everything the Taupō region has to offer and slowing down enough to appreciate the quiet. It's the kind of place that's just as memorable for the time spent at the cabin as it is for the adventures beyond it.

Things We Did
- Walk

- Beach
A short and easy walk offering views over the Aratiatia Rapids, where the Waikato River rushes through a narrow gorge. A quick stop that takes less than 30 minutes and is great when timed with the opening of the dam gates.
A relaxing cruise across Lake Taupō that takes you to the famous Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings, an iconic contemporary Māori artwork etched into the cliff face and set against the lake’s scenery.
A relaxed but active way to explore Taupō’s lakefront. Grab a coffee from Espresso Cove before wandering along the lakeside track to Hot Water Beach, where natural geothermal springs meet the shores of Lake Taupō.
