Mountains, Lakes and Countryside Living
Adventure in Marotiri, Taupō, NZ
Just out of Taupo and a stone's throw away from Kinloch sits this stunning rustic hut in the middle of the countryside. On a clear day, you can sit outside around the fire pit and look south and see the mountains in the distance.
Joel and I have been busy with adventures around New Zealand for the past couple of months and this stay at Kawakawa Hut couldn't have come at a better time. We spent a very relaxing few days here, enjoying the indoor fireplace during the clouded over mornings, sitting around with cups of coffee and fresh baked goods from the bakery in town, and basking in the sunshine at the lake or outside the hut with a good book in the sunny afternoons.
Though our main goal for these few days was to fully relax, we fit in a couple of adventures around the area. A quick look at Huka Falls in Taupo, burgers from the General Store in Kinloch, and a hike in the mountains on our way south.
Kawakawa Hut was the perfect little getaway, a chance to reset and unwind, and no better place to do it than being surrounded by mountains, lakes and the countryside.

Huka Falls is the largest waterfall on the Waikato River, which is one of the longest rivers in New Zealand.
The Waikato River which is usually 100m wide, condenses to a 20m wide gorge where every second up to 220,000 litres of water flows through the gorge over a 20m drop.
The name Huka is the Maori word for 'foam', which is appropriate as the falling water and rapids certainly resemble foam, especially under flooding conditions.

Tongariro National Park is which is a must-see if you're in the area. There are incredible waterfalls and day hikes for you to explore these landscapes. We joined some friends and hiked to Tama Lakes for sunset, a 17km hike which takes around 5-6hours to return. A reasonably easy hike but be prepared for mountain conditions
We stopped in at Brumby's and picked up some fresh bread and Hot Cross Buns.
We got burgers for dinner one night from the Kinloch General Store and sat at lake while the sun went down.
We went for a walk around the lake at Kinloch Beach, jumped in the water and found some sticks to throw for our furry friend.
